|

The subject line indicates my basic question: After CELTA, how quickly can I get a job?
Specifically, if I take the CELTA course in another country, will I be able to get a job quickly, or will it take several months? Will I be able to stay in the country while unemployed, or will I have to return home?
Obviously, the answers to those questions depends on where I take the CELTA course. I prefer an Arabic speaking country, but that's not very important to me. My primary goal is to get the CELTA and to get a job that pays decent fast enough that I don't have to return to the States. The location doesn't matter much to me, but if it helps narrow down my options, I'd prefer Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Malaysia, or Thailand. Like I said, I don't really care - I want a place with a CELTA program or other good TEFL program and a TEFL market that I could break into quickly. Is that possible? In what country\city is it most likely to work out?
Here's some more information about me. I'll graduate in December with a BA in English. I don't have any teaching experience; I could get some experience tutoring international students if that would help. I have an US passport.
If I don't get a TEFL job quickly after finishing the CELTA, I have enough money in savings to support myself for several months, but obviously, I don't want to do that. I'm single, and I'll turn 25 this year. I prefer Arabic speaking countries because that's the only foreign language I know. I'm not looking at the Gulf since the TEFL market there requires experience. Obviously, I need a livable wage, but I have a fairly simple lifestyle.
So, given my goal, where do you suggest I start?

With a BA in English and a TEFL cert - I don't think you'll have any trouble lining up work quickly.
It does depend on the country a bit though. I'm not sure that you couldn't rather quickly find work in the Gulf states - UAE in particular. There is a bit of a shortage of female teachers in the area - or at least there was when I was in Saudi. Life in the UAE in particular is not bad - but carries some of the stigma of the Saudi world - so has a hard time attracting females. I'd ask on the ME or UAE parts of this board just to be safe - I think you might be surprised.
You'd land a job in the first week in Thailand - almost as quickly in Korea.
Good luck! |

It's 'a US passport', not 'an US passport'. |

Helpful advice from Zero Hour, that.

Well, if you were willing to go to Indonesia or China, you could have a job lined up before you finish the course.
Since you prefer an Arabic-speaking country, you might want to look into Indonesia. A sizable percentage of the country (I'd guess about 20%) speak Arabic, so you would have an opportunity to practice there. |

Where did you get that idea? I don't think so! A lot of Indonesians know some Arabic from their studies of the Koran, but I don't think it's used in any other context - it certainly wouldn't be a place where a foreigner could practice it. |

Er, from the students I taught English to. I was surprised at how many of them were knowledgable of Arabic. For example, I taught intermediate-level English two hours a day at an Islamic boarding school, and most of those students obviously had a better grasp of Arabic than English. |

I stand corrected, then. I'd still be surprised if they actually used it other than in the context of their religion, but it could be a point of contact for someone trying to get to grips with a new culture so I apologise for contradicting your original point. |

Thanks, I'll look into that.

Those are great best-case scenarios. I do find Indonesia appealing, so thanks for mentioning it.

I think that would hold true in other nations with large Muslim populations, like Turkey and Malaysia. That's part of why Turkey and Malaysia are on my list, since it would make it easier to adjust. It might be just as easy to find locals who could converse in English, but then my ability to speak Arabic wouldn't improve.
Thanks!
