I am considering leaving Nova and going to work as an ESL teacher on one of the US military bases. However, I may continue to work at Nova parttime and on base full time. To work on base you only need a SOFA sponsorship which I will have, but to work in Japan I need a working visa. My question is this: Can I renew my one-year visa from Nova for a longer period without going through all of their red tape? And if so, can someone tell me how I'd go about doing so? Everytime I ask Nova they don't give me a straight answer.
Thanks! |

What? Sorry, but your post is very unclear and it seems you do not understand the differences.
What kind of visa do you have at the moment? What kind of visa will you have in 2 or 3 months time? |

How can you renew your visa with NOVA if you already have SOFA sponsorship? Is your current visa with SOFA or NOVA? What will happen to your SOFA sponsorship if NOVA re-sponsors your visa?
NOVA does not sponsor part-timers (those on Flex Time have working holiday or other visas) so I dont see how they can renew your visa when working part time.
You cant have it both ways. |

If you got sponsored for a visa through NOVA, just remember that it is not NOVA who gave you the visa. It is immigration (or more exactly the department of defense, I think). And, if you have this work visa, nobody (and I mean NOBODY) can do anything to extend a visa longer than what immigration says. So, if you want a 3-year visa, you have no say in the matter, and neither does your employer. It is what immigration decides. |

Thanks I realize maybe that post wasn't so clear after all.
But I think the answer explained by Glenski.
I had a one year visa but wanted to renew for longer. Nova was given me the run around. And to complicate things I was considering going to work on base, which I only need SOFA (base sponsorship) to work there. In case the base job sucked, I wanted to still have the option to work in Japan (which you need some sort of Visa for).
Anyways, sorry for the incredibly complicated post.
But THANKS for the info!!! |

Hi!
From what I know of the military people who lived near me in Yamaguchi-Ken they don't need a separate working visa to have a job in Japan and can just work (either on the base or for a Japanese company) with their SOFA status. I can easily check it with them if you like??????? |
