Thanx for the response to teaching ideas. I have another question though. Has anybody ever paid a school a deposit of US$500/600 to prove their good faith? Is there anyway of reaching a compromise about this? |

It is a new idea in so far as I know...for anywhere.
It doesn't seem like a good one either.

Don't do it. As far as I know it is illegal for the school to ask you to do this. Perhaps Roger can offer some solid experienced reply to this one, Roger?

I have NEVER heard of such a thing! RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!
There's no way you should work for these people, unless they give you US $10,000 as a sign of THEIR good faith. |

I agree with Kurochan...You should be the one asking for a deposit. What's the name of the school? Put it on the information board if you can't name it here. What a crock.... |

I can only agree with all previous posters! But here is the background (as I see it):
Most Chinese employees lose one month's pay if they quit (and often if they get dismissed!). We expats are somewhat protected, well, save for the airfare. But airfare can be protected too if you ask them to pay it in monthly instalments together with your salary. I have done that for years.
So, once more: NEVER GIVE THEM A DOWRY! Yes, it would be that - a dowry!
And, by the way: I have seen a number of job offers that, if you ask specifically, require you to pay parts or the whole of your visa!
That too is not regular! |

This kind of school sounds like they want your wallet and in the future give you the boot and you would be $500-600 poorer. My advice stay away from schools like this if we foreign teachers can stick together we can prevent garbage like this from taking place. |

Thanx guys for all the advice. I guess once again a Big THANK YOU goes to Dave's forum because if we did not have this forum we would not be able to stick together, right....???? The name of the school is Zhongyan Institute of Technology in Zhengzhou city and the Foreign Affairs Director is Ms. Sun Wei. After I responded to their offer and said I do not accept this condition of the contract, they actually called me to tell me that they have to do this because the government expect them to do it. But thanx to you, I now know better. I was thinking that this a strange condition, that I have to pay them in order to work for them. I guess it can only happen in China ..... |

You know, my friend is working at Sheng Da in Zhengzhou, and he said at the school next to him, the students rioted when they were all locked on campus. From what my friend heard, there were some SARS cases there, and the students wanted to get the heck out.
There can't be THAT many tertiary institutions in Zhengzhou, can there? Maybe this school has more problems than just the shady foreign affairs department. |

Actually, Zhengzhou has at least twenty colleges, many like ShengDa are fer outside the city. At Shengda (when there is no SARS) Students are only allowed to leave the school on the weekends..before SARS. Though before SARS, they always climbed over the gate.
Actually the sick student at Shengda just had a "normal disease" so now it doesn't matter whether he lives or dies. The problem is...do you let seniors leave the campus to find jobs (If any student can find a company hiring anymore what with SARS. If you let the seniors go, then what about the rest? Of course, richer students go to these schools.
ten colleges I know of in Zhengzhou, the students are locked in. Two colleges I know of they are not. MAkes sense, right? And of course, the friends hold on to each other at the gate...good SARS prevention. And the students who do work deatial leave every morning like usual. What about elsewhere? |
