Hehe. Welcome to the world of Japanese taxation.

Aside from the income tax that you are already paying, (it gets deducted from your monthly salary at a rate of about 5%), you are also required to pay municiapl taxes to your city or town.

What you received is a "convenient" payment plan for your municipal taxes from the last year. Yes, you must pay it. The amounts with the dates you indicated are printed on pre-perforated stubs you tear off and are due on alternate months. These are the due dates by when you should go to city hall by to pay the indicated amount. If I remember correctly, my first installment was 20,000 and each subsequent one was 10,000 over the course of the year.

If you also look on what you received, you will see the total. If you don't want to do the "every-other-month" thing and just pay the entire amount outright, you can as well.

Hope that helps.

Because in your first year, you do not get taxed. this is because the tax rate is based on your previous year's income. After being in japan 1 year or so, they take you previous year's income and calculate the amount you are required to pay.

YOur first year in Japan, you have no prior salary in Japan, so you are not taxed. Each year you are taxed on the previous year's earnings (from what I understand). It is legit.

iF you will notice the posts are 2 minutes apart, that means you are posting at the same time and one happens to get loaded or posted faster than the other. Its like twins being born but both can not exit at exactly the same time. Occasionally i will see a post, write an answer and by the time i have posted Glenski will have already written and posted a response.
