Hello everyone!

This looks like a really nice community, glad I found it.
Have a couple of questions about teaching in Moscow and the best way to go about it.

Just a little bit about me first.
I'll be coming to Moscow in early June from Canada, been to Russia many times but will actually try working this time. Have a business degree in finance and am licensed to sell mutual funds, basically one step away from being a stock broker. Been teaching English to foreign students at my college for about 2 years. Got an Oxford TEFL certificate about about 6 months ago, probably should of went for the CELTA though. My folks came over from Moscow back in the day so my Russian is pretty good. It's not perfect by any means but I can usually get my point across. My visa and accommodation needs have been taken care of.

E-mailed 7 schools who were hiring and got 6 reply's back the same day about me coming in for an interview ASAP. Now my question is, what kind of compensation should I be asking for? Don't need any kind of support from them, just basically can show up and start teaching the same day. Would really like to get around $20 per hour. From what I've been reading, that amount seems pretty high but not impossible to get.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated and welcomed,

ELsordo

Oh yeah, I'm 22

Why not first check with your e-mail response that they can they help provide you with accomadation, and can they give you an invitation to work for them. What hours will you need to work for them. On salary, ask them for an offer. Can you get a contract or agreement before you arrive in Moscow. Ideally it would be great if you were legally set up to work for a school, and they have provided assistance in accomadation. If the work guaranteed is only a small number of hours, fine. Get partime freelance work from other schools , you seem to know your way around Moscow, and appear to have some business knowledge, get better paid teaching work privately to top up your wages.

SALARY $20.00 an academimic hour, difficult with your main employer, who can provide you with qualified invitation and accomadation, please prove me wrong , love to hear it, but then after settling in and doing a bit of shopping around yes $20.00 plus is reasonable to expect

Hey Bels!

Don't really require any housing support from the schools cause I've got friends and family in Moscow who will be more than happy to let me stay with them for a couple of months. Ideally want to rent a room somewhere in the center with other teachers. Working on that little problem right now, hope something turns up soon. (if anyone has a room in the center, please send me an e-mai, willing to pay $500 a month).

Totally agree with you on the freelancing part. The plan right now is to work for a school in the morning and aft hours and hit up the privates in the evening. Gave some in company lessons in Moscow last summer for something to do. The money was really good $30-50 PAH however, the travel time was a major constraint but that can be eliminated through careful planning.

I've been reading a lot of your posts on the expat site and various other places. Wish you the best of luck on obtaining legal working status, starting your own school, and developing the teachers association.Smile

If you you have been reading the expat.ru sites on the forum maybe I can suggest trying the accomadation section to share a flat , or have you already done this?

Maybe if you have been reading the expat forums you may suggest to others that this was not only my idea to start an association , and that that there are many others onto this idea since January. I have received many privates, and meetings are wanted. Ideas of an association do vary a great deal
