My school says there is no sick pay and I cannot take off any paid days (outside of National Holidays) for the first 6 months of my contract. What are the laws here? I currently work a 5.5 day week |

There are no laws in Japan governing payment for sick leave and if you take time off due to illness expect it to be unpaid in the first six months. A kind of penalty for being sick but in Japan its perfectly legal. Thats why you see people coming to work with colds and the flu. You virtually have to be on deaths door with a 40 degree temperature, and I have heard of people being called to work at NOVA even while they are vomiting and have a temperature.
Work the six months, try not to get sick and take your paid vacation days if you need them. |

as Paul said you are not intitled by law to paid sick days until you have worked with the company for 6 months. after the 6 months if you work more than 5 days or 35 hours a week you are entitled to 10 paid sick days. check this site http://nambu.generalunion.org/law.htm, scroll to the bottom of the page to see the chart of allowed paid sick days. |
