The school I am applying to says on sick days it is the teacher's responsibility to get a substitute teacher as well as organize how they will be paid. Have any of you dealt with this matter??

My guess is that the school you are applying to is not a chain school, but one of the small independants. The good thing about the school that you are looking at is that they told you this upfront.

Chain schools often have more than one foreign teacher at each branch such that a rearranging of schedules can ensure that all classes have a teacher during your absence. They also have a central office as well as less official networks with their other branches by which they can often find a substitute teacher from outside for you.

The small independants are at a distinct disadvantage here. They don't have the same contact with foreigners and therefore often rely upon the actual teacher to ensure that he or she is in the classroom. If he or she can't be then they need to find their own replacement. I wouldn't like to work under these criteria, but I certainly don't think that the school is being unreasonable in this regard.

If taking such a job you could see if any of your friends in the area would be willing to cover your classes should you have absences in the future. Alternatively, find our what the penalty is for having a sickie without giving them a sub and work out whether that is worthwhile for you.

Clark,

I agree with you, but this is not a perfect world. Of course everyone would like to get paid for every minute they work. That goes for all careers and jobs, not just for ESL. I think any time you are working in a country that is not your native land you are some what at the whim of the employer. And to counter your arguement about the school making money from you grading papers is the fact that the school is giving you the opporitunity to make money because they have an establishment that has offered you employment. I honestly think the way you do, but I believe that most business owners, not just in ESL, believe the other way, that they are the ones doing you a favor. We both know that without teachers there is no school, and without schools there are no teachers (except privates). Unfortunatly the business world is full of egos, and like you said, an ESL school is a business.

My fault. This should be in the Hess thread. Sorry!

How they expect you to find another teacher with only a moment's notice. If there are no penalties for being sick but it is only expected that you find another teacher then don't worry about this clause. I have seen a few contracts with such ridiculous clauses that I wouldn't go anywhere near. Remember, despite anything that the employer says, these are negotiable. Try to talk to your employer about it immediately before signing the contract. Get a pen and literally cross it out in front of them. But only if there isn't any penalty.

I have a similar situation where I am expected to find a sub if I want to take any days off work. But it is okay if I am sick (and give an hours notice). Because of the difficulty in finding a sub (for below average pay) it is far easier for me to call in sick than to try to arrange a day off. My school is actually encouraging me to be dishonest. The same goes for the penalty clause to leave the contract.
