Just a little side note and completely off topic, but is anyone else's English getting worse. I have been teaching for six months now and after spending most of my day in the classroom, when I get home and talk to my friends, I can't for the life of me put simple sentences together. Maybe it's just the overload of teaching or just hearing incorrect English all day, but I am having trouble just talking to people. I am starting to have mental gaps and I begin to have a loss of words. This is strange as I am usually good for the verbal diarrhoea and can speak for hours about absolutely nothing. Anyway just a thought. A little bored on the nice Friday morning and I thought I would just (ohh, what's the phrase again?) throw out a suggestion? Or something like that.

Peace
Dave

I'm married to a non-native speaker and we lived for six years in countries where native lang was not English. The only native speakers I was EVER around were my work colleagues. When we came to North America, it took me three or four months to put my lang skills back together! My family still thinks I 'talk funny.' OH, well, whatever.

I went home to America for Christmas and an old friend complimented me on my new english accent.

Now there's a turn for the worse.

I found myself doing the same when I first started.

Then I met someone else from the states who sounded like they were from Ireland because he was speaking with a lot of sentence stresses. I had talked with him or about an hour and I didn't even know he was from the states.

At that point I realized that trying to change your accent is like trying to deny where your from. Since then I have made it a point to speak the way I normally would although slightly clearer and using a lot of sentence stresses only when I am giving out instructions.

I like all accents. But they're no reason to hide where you're from even if Bush is in office. Wink
