I have applied for several jobs teaching in Japanese schools for the
coming school year.

Sagan, IEC, Kent Eikaiwa, Evergreen, Cosmo, Korakuen English Centre.

I had an interview with Sagan on Friday - my impression of them was
very positive. I have interviews with IEC, and E-Staff coming up and
am yet to hear back from the others.

If anyone has any experience of working for these companies I would
be glad to hear.

I have seen a not very positive comment on Korakuen English Centre.

Also if anyone can relate the differences between teaching in a
government school compared with a private school I would also be
very interested to hear.

With thanks

Cecilia

Cosmo has a listing in the current Ohayo Sensei for Nishinomiya. Anybody know anything about them?

I once interviewed for IEC. I found them to be very nice and they seemed quite professional, but the salary was far to small.

Do a search for Korakuen. I just started a thread on that not long ago.

They are known for making extremely low bids for BOE contracts.

http://www.cosmo-web-net.co.jp/outline/index.html

If you read what's on their website, you'll find that just like all the other foreign teacher dispatching companies in Japan, they are operating illegally.

2. native AETs are [illegally] outsourced

3. [Japanese] teachers are dispatched, and they list their company's dispatch licence number

For 2001, they boast that they [illegally] sent AETs to 100 public schools.

Only Japanese teachers are legally employed through them. How they get away with this, I don't know other than probably because very few ALTs can read Japanese and are aware of their rights.

I should add that besides Cosmo, Sagan Speak, IEC, Kent Eikaiwa, Evergreen, Korakuen English Centre, RCS, Wing Institute, W5, are doing exactly or nearly exactly the same thing.

Same thoughts. Nice people, but the salary is far to low - 230,000 for full-time.

I wonder how desperate some people are that they take these positions? Shocked

There is information about Korakuen on the Nambu blog at http://www.interacunion.org/

Apparently Korakuen does not have a dispatching licence and sends teachers to schools illegally.

It must be supply and demand. I know friends that just want the experience of living abroad for experience to use for grad schools and to learn a language. As long as there is someone to fill the jobs, there will be companies that offer that salary.

Is IEC the place in northern Hokkaido?

If so, stay as far away as possible. They advertise every 3 months to fill the same position, so you KNOW they have a scam going. If it IS this place, then I guarantee you should stay away.

Obviously VERY desperate and very uninformed about wages here.

Heck, some employers are advertising a 40-hour week for only 170,000 yen/month!!!

If you are interviewing for private company ALT jobs Cecilia, then these are almost always illegal. And so, can you guess what kind of reception you get from teachers at the public school? Not a very good one I am afriad. You are just considered temp staff by the board of education as well who won't give a crap about your working conditions.

I knew a girl who worked for Kent. She lasted only 6 months, but during that time she got a cold and the teachers at her school blamed her for getting sick.

If you get job on the JET Programme (which is legitimate) you avoid a lot of negative garbage from the Japanese teachers. Otherwise, who can blame them for trying to protect their workplace against illegally employed workers?

Korakuen definately uses illegal contracts for ALTs.
I think Evergreen was found guilty by Japanese courts of also using illegal contracts for teachers.
The resy I am not so sure about, but they are small outfits and they usually follow the lead of the bigger schools such as Interac which also use illegal contracts.

Wangtesol, in your experience, do the Japanese teachers really know about this illegality with dispatch companies? How are they actually "protecting" their schools by giving ALTs a cold reception?

No, it's based in Tokyo. Their contracts are for Itabashi-Ku and Minato-Ku.

what exactly is the definition of illegal and what does it matter in this context?

BOEs all over Japan are employing alts this way year after year with the full knowledge of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour.
