A freind and I have both recently come to the same conclusion independantly and want to teach in japan. We decided if we are both planning on going, it would be nice to be placed near each other. Are there any of the bigger companies that will take this into consideration or should we just cross our fingers and hope? |

All of the bigger companies (eikaiwas) and even the JET Programme tell applicants that they will take it into account. That, of course, is not meant to be a promise. You go where they have the vacancies, so if they have 2 that are near each other, you might get it.
It also depends on what sort of "friends" you are. Just buddies will probably not count for much in their minds. |

Nova does this. A friend and I came over at the same time. We were originally scheduled to be roommates, but Nova in their infinite wisdom changed my placement a week before departure. (Nevermind that there were a TON of newbies in our batch, why they couldn't move someone coming over solo is beyond me - but that's a different rant altogether.... ) Anyway, we ended up living on the opposite ends of the kanto area. It could have been worse I suppose, say Hokkaido and Kagoshima. ymmv |

My friend and her friend did this. They were put in the same city, but in different apts, just like the person above. I also knew both of them before leaving (we went to the same university) and Nova put us in the same Nova "area", as per our request. It worked out really well because it gave us both the opportunity to visit each other and get out of our cities and see something new for cheap. Nova is pretty accomadating, because they always need more teachers and they are big enough that it is possible for them to do this most times...I think they probably figure if they can make new teachers happy when they first get there, chances are they will stick out the year. Just make sure you mention it throughout the process so there can't be any "we didn't know" excuse. |
