I've looked at many, many job descriptions since coming to China and so many of them are so . . . vacuous. What I mean is, they use about 1/10 of their space to describe the job: the standard pay, the housing accomodations, the meals, airfare reimbursements, etc. Then they spend the rest talking about their beautiful city and it's long history and what it's famous for, blah, blah, blah.

Is there really going to be a job description that says something like: "We have a great school and let us tell you the reasons why. However, like many larger cities in China, traffic is a mess and pollution is getting worse and the nearest Carrefour is 200 km away!" (of course not!)

Here's a recent example:

Quote:
lishui foreign language school is a high-rated primary and middle school in lishui city , Zhejiang province .lishui is a beautiful tourist city three hours from Hang Zhou.

The school is well-known for its beautiful campus and high teaching quality.

Currently two foreign teachers are wanted.

Salary package includes:

1)4000yuan monthly salary for less than14classes/week
2) Round trip international fares 8000yuan per year
3) 150m3 two bedroom apartment with living room and bathroom and cooking utensils .
4)working visa

The students age from 8-15 yrs.
30students per class.

Requirements for the teachers:
1) native English speakers
2) available right now
3) couple with Z visa is preferrable

About lishui:
Lishui city locates in the Southwest of Zhejiang
Province. It has an area of 17,300 sq. km and a
population of 2.48 million. Lishui was named
Chuzhou in A.D.589. In the past 1400 years or so,
lishui used to be the Prefecture Government Seat (the
center of polities, economic and
culture in southwest of Zhejiang). In May 2000, it was
approved by China State Council that the
organizational system of prefecture be changed into
city. As an urban district, Liandu District is
established. Lishui City has under its jurisdiction of
seven counties, namely, Qingtian, Jinyun, Suichang,
Qingyuan, Yunhe, Songyang, Jingning and entrusted by
Zhejiang Provincial Government to manager Longquan as
a Country-
grade City.

With its most beautiful landscapes of green hills and
clean waters, quite a lot of places of historical
interest and their advantageous ecological
surroundings, Lishui City is the first National
Ecological Demonstration Zone in Zhejiang Province.
There established state/province-grade reserves with
beautiful scenes, such as Mount Fengyangshan in
Lonquan city, Mount Baishanzhu In Qingyuan County,
Mount Jiulong in Suichang County, Tongji Weir in Bihu
Town. Former site of celadon kiln in Longquan,
Yanqingshi Tower in Songyang County, . . .

And it goes on and on . . . and on! Where's the information about textbooks? teaching equipment and resources? Classroom set-up? Previous FTs email contacts? What about pictures of the school or an average classroom?

The fact is, many Chinese schools don't have the amenities one might expect to present a decent education to their students. In a typical room one might find plain, utilitiarian desks, a podium, a chalkboard, chalk. Granted, some may be a bit more modern, but these schools tend to brag about what they have. I want to read some advertisements that talk more about the school and its students than about the lush, green hills that surround the sleepy, peaceful seaside community.

People should be aware that falsehood, deceit, and treachery are standard tools employed by school administrators who deal with FTs.

It has been confirmed repeatedly in my situation. I finally told one of the vice principals that I preferred to not deal with the FAO because he lies to the administration about me and lies to me about them. Only later did it occur to me that the VP does the same thing.

Most beginners should insist on the emails of two or three FTs at the school that they are considering. If you are to be the first FT, expect a very difficult time and be prepared to leave when they start burning you.

The website of this school is full of lies, outdated information, and other nonsense.

There are a number of redeeming features, however. The housing is relatively good, location advantageous, and students well behaved.

Let the FT beware.

'Tofuman', given a choice, your average Mainland Chinese person will lie, by default, even if there is nothing obvious to be gained from doing so. This is what is referred to as Chinese 'culture' and/or 'face'.

'Kev7161', I think your observations are valid, but I think in fairness to the employers, they are simply catering to the majority of their prospective employees who, it must be said, they appear to understand quite well. After all, most backpackers place a greater emphasis on their immediate environment than they do their working conditions.

ZH: I think it's ridiculous to put 1.3 billion people in the same bracket.

Kev: I agree somewhat with ZH's last comment - that it's in the employer's interest to leave that sort of information out. It may be as ZH says, that they cater to the job-seeker's wishes. But I think there's another element: by leaving that sort of info out, the job-seeker has to e-mail or call the empoyer. Thereafter the employer has a way to contact the job-seeker. I still get a few e-mails from employers looking to hire; I applied for a job there ages ago, and it either hasn't been filled, or was filled then emptied, and they are looking for employees again. Having e-mail addresses of prospective employees would be useful to them.

ZH, i hadn't thought of it that way, about the default mode being, "to lie." You may be onto something.

I had to discuss something with the FAO here yesterday. He went into one of his "macros"-- a lie I have heard many times about his love and devotion to me.

The word "default mode" sprung to mind, I interrupted him and said, "Look, I just don't believe you." He didn't protest. Perhaps he is relieved to know that I know that he is just a "talking head" for the administration.

There's got to de a "divine" spark somewhere in that abyss of a mind.

Re: Point 3: 150 metres CUBED?! I personally would not want to live in a room that might be 5.31 m by 5.31 m by 5.31 m. Insist on a bigger room!

If it had been me, I would have been wearing a big heavy pair of hob-nailed boots when talking with him, so he could have seen clearly what other possible use one could have for this footwear other than just wearing it.

It is not really lieing but telling you what you want to hear . The Chinese are the best in the world at this . The other thing they have trouble doing is giving you bad news so they tell you again what you want to hear . I have gone up to pairs of Chinese many times to ask directions in Chinese and the two people will then point in opposite directions. What gets me down are all the people who try to help you who have no idea what you want and only waste your time and try your patience .
