Does anyone know where you can surf in Taiwan? I've heard Kenting is good and that the North Coast has an abundance of copasetic breaks. Anything on the West Coast? Any deets would be greatly appreciated.

Zero surf on the west coast. Indeed there are hardly any decent beaches there. The northeast coast and the area around Taidong have the best surfing.

Taiwan has waves on the North, NE, East, SE, South and SW coasts depending on the time of the year and swell direction.
Kenting and NE coasts (Dashi/ Fulong) are the easiest to get to via train or bus/ scooter but you would want a car or car access to get the spots when they are on.

My advice: If you are a really keen surfer live in proximity to the surf but not in the middle of nowhere you may want that though. Think Pindung or Taipei, both 1-2 hrs from good waves. Also, check the buoys, weather charts etc and hit a spot that will have swell and offshores, don't just follow the sheep...spots can get crowded but you can drive around the bend and it can be empty and pumping.

Also typhoons can produce epic surf and you can track them well on the 'net. check oceanweather.com buoyweather.com that'll give you a start.

Bring a fish, shorty and mini mal if you have it, rarely it gets over 6ft although the east coast does get pummled by pacific swells.

good luck and don't listen to others bad advice......if you really want waves you will find them in Taiwan, even in the least expected places...

The police are grabbing surfers? Hmm. Anyway, Taidong is the best Taiwan has to offer, really. Friendlier people, little traffic, sun...
Now that surfing is getting more popular I wonder if the beaches are getting crowded...?
