Culture Lesson

International cooperation and cultural exchange

Movie - The Amazing Panda Adventure

An American schoolboy does a class project about conservation and protecting China's Panda from extinction. He later gets the opportunity to visit China and while there he befriends a young Chinese girl and her grandfather.

While trekking through China's wilderness, in Sichuan province, the 3 come across poachers who have captured a Panda cub to sell on the international black market.

The American boy, Chinese girl, and her grandfather manage to take the captured Panda cub away from the poachers. The poachers then pursue the trio attempting to reclaim their bounty.

The ensuing chase is full of adventure.

5 minute words

Teacher will prepare 5 sheets of paper for 5 teams simply by writing Team A on the top of each of 5 sheets of paper, Team B, Team C, etc.

Divide the class into 5 teams of 5 to 6 students, i.e. teams A through E. Try to spread the teams out around the classroom if possible. Only the team member that writes needs to sit, the others can stand around him/her. Give each team their first sheet of paper (minimize the risk of confusion).

When the game is being played, 4 or 5 students will speak words and 1 student will write them down. Explain to the students that each person in their team must have a turn at writing the words.

The teacher will say one of the below-listed categories and students have 1 minute to think of and write down as many words as possible for that category. Spelling is not important as long as the teacher can understand the word, i.e. ?french fried? is obviously ?french fries?, but ?stick? may not be accepted as ?steak?; it?s up to the teacher.

The teacher will call out ?Start? and ?Stop?. After the teacher has called out ?Stop?, the writing team member has to run to the teacher and hand-in their team?s sheet. The last team to hand in their sheet loses 5 points! (as an incentive to stop writing immediately the teacher calls out ?Stop?.

After each round, the teacher will read out the word list of each team and write their score on the board. Obviously the teacher will discuss (joke about) any incorrect spelling and strange words. Teacher will then give each team their second (and so on) sheet of paper.

Superstitions
What are some Chinese superstitions?
What are some foreign superstitions?

Divide class into teams of 5. First task, list and explain as many Chinese superstitions that you can think of. Second task list and explain as many Foreign superstitions that you can think of.

Chinese

Number 4 unlucky ? why? (sounds like the word ?death)

Number 8 is lucky ? why? (sounds like get rich)

White ? the colour for funerals ? why?

A mirror above the front door of your home for good luck ? why?

Chopsticks upright in your food ? why not (looks like incense sticks, an offering to the dead)

Don?t whistle at night

Don?t touch a pregnant woman on the back

The number of steps in a staircase should be even-numbered

Don?t eat duck on your 18th birthday

New Year

Wear new, red underpants

Don?t eat meat on the first day of the New Year

Open all doors and windows to your home at midnight

Don?t sweep the floor

Foreign

Lies - Cross your heart and hope to die. Cross your fingers behind your back.

Wedding Day - If you see a rainbow, you will have a lucky marriage. If you see a pig you will have a bad marriage.

Sleeping / Bed ? He got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning.

Birthday ? If you blow out all the candles on your cake in one breathe, your wish will come true.

Find money, give it away and more money will come to you

It's bad luck to walk under a ladder - Triangle, religious symbol, don't break it.

Beware of Friday the Thirteenth. Christ was crucified on a Friday. Christians also noted that twelve witches plus one devil are present at Satanic ceremonies so Friday and 13 make a deadly combination.

God Bless You. When a great plague took hold of Europe 655 years ago, 25 million people died. People began sneezing violently, the Pope passed a law. Since sneezing meant that the person was going to die of plague, people were required to bless the sneezer.

Breaking Mirrors = 7 years bad luck. People believed that reflections were actually glimpses of the viewers soul. People had gazing pools in their gardens in which they could look at themselves. A really mean thing to do was wait until a person was gazing at their reflection and throw a stone in the water because the disruption of the reflection affected their soul and brought about bad luck.

Thanks Spiderman. I have done superstitions before. I seem to know more about Chinese superstitions than they do? The other team one regarding other topics is good. Thank you for your input.

I just want to point out that you should only wear red underwear in the new year if it is your year. For example, I was born in the year of monkey so I should wear red underwear every year of the monkey otherwise I will have lots of bad luck. I'm not a supersticious man, but last year this rung true.

Who Survives?

You?re going to Singapore for a holiday. The plane develops a problem and crashes into the sea. As often happens, the tail section (the very back of the plan) breaks off and the people sitting at the back of the plane survive - only 10 people survive.

Among the survivors is an air hostess who was able to grab an inflatable life raft. The life raft is designed for 6 people. 8 people get on board without a problem but when person number 9 gets on the raft, it begins to sink. It is clear that the raft can accept 8 people, but not 10. 2 people are going to have to stay in the sea-water. The 2 people who must stay in the water will probably die due to exposure or being eaten by sharks.

So, 10 people have to make a decision; which 8 people can get onboard the life raft and which 2 people must stay in the water? Each person must think about, and then explain to the other people, why they should be allowed to stay on the life raft. After each person has spoken, the group will then vote about who can stay in the life raft and who must stay in the sea.

1 Doctor, Chinese, man, 50
2 Retired, Chinese, man, 60 ? rich (husband)

5 Cook, Chinese, man, 35
6 Taxi driver, Chinese, man, 45
7 Student, Chinese, girl, 20
