|
|
I'm heading to Kyoto on June 1. I'm trying to decide what to pack and was wondering whether or not I should bring a laptop. There are a lot of people that I will want to email back home, but I wasn't sure if the cost/hassle of getting a connection at my apartment is worthwhile. My Japanese is extremely minimal right now. Would it be better to use internet cafes or to bring along the laptop? Does anyone know how expensive a good connection is in Kyoto? |

Red, I am living in Kyoto and use a Yahoo BB broadband connection. I got mine when they were givng away free connections but it should cost no more than a few thousand yen for the connection fee with NTT. My modem simply plugs into the wall like a regular telephone line.
Currently I pay 3,800 yen for unlimited connection. Unfortunately its hard to get English service for non-Japanese speakers with Yahoo, but I have never had any problems that I need to call them. Global Online has a good service for English speakers if you dont speak Japanese.
If you have a laptop I suggest you bring it, but if you dont you can pick up reasonably priced models- after all they do make them here. There is one Internet cafe in Kyoto I have heard of but they are in rather inconvenient locations. May be some coffee shops like Starbucks have connections as well. |

Bring laptop - Get cable. Sod the expense; it's worth it in the long run. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. I understand what you mean about dial-up wintersweet. I have T1 and I can hardly even imagine going back |
