I'm a high school teacher who has just rec'd a one year leave of absence. Is it possible to travel (by bus, train?) from Puerto Escondido, Mexico through Guatamala, El Salvador, Nicaragua to Costa Rica? I'm travelling on about $3000 Canadian and would like to stay close to the Pacific to surf for about ten months and pick up odd jobs (any recommendations) along the way (including teaching ESL). Is it possible to travel from country to country (how are visas issued for Canadian citizens?) A delicate balance between surf and working to get by is strongly wished for. Thanks kindly for your comments. |

-Travel by bus, yes; train, no.
- You might be able to get the odd job teaching a little English on the beach, but it wouldn't pay very well unless you were willing to sign a contract and stick around for a while.
- Be careful working without a visa. I dunno about the other countries on your path, but Mexican Immigration tends to take a very dim view of working illegally.
Personally, I think if you're here to surf, then just surf. If you want to teach, teach. I don't think it's possible to do both on an equal footing and still be a good teacher. |
