Hi everyone,

I've been reading everyone's posts here for the past month, and I really appreciate all the helpful information.

I'm planning on heading to Buenos Aires this summer, and I'd like to study at la Universidad de Buenos Aires in additon to teaching English in an institute and/or doing private lessons. Do any of you know how to enroll in la Universidad de Buenos Aires? I confess I'm totally ignorant, and I only know how the American and German university systems function. Anyone foreigners manage to enroll there with success? Any stories about university life would be appreciated.

Also, anyone know if there are student dormitories? I know Latin America doesn't really have a lot of dorms, but maybe in a big city like BsAs there are a few? Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Best,

Jonathan

i studied abroad in buenos aires in 2003. i took classes at UBA and universidad del salvador. i'm not sure if it's true that you have to have a visa, but that's what they told us. and when registering for the university, they required us to have copies of the passport and visa. getting the visa was a pain in the ass.

www.uba.ar is the website for uba, there's a link for "internacionales" near the top on the right. if you can get in touch with the registrar, they could also help you figure out the most current information. (but keep all of your communications with them so you can prove they said you were registered!!!).

as far as dorms, there isn't much in the way of student housing but i did hear rumors of places for out of town students to stay... (i stayed with a family). you may have some luck with an apartmentshare if someone is looking for a short term roommate... check out clarin.com and search the inmuebles classifieds (prices in pesos). also check out www.yesba.org which has a newsletter with ads for apartment shares, rooms for rent, etc.

i know that wasn't a lot of concrete info, but i hope it helps some. good luck!

Thanks for the info.

So, should I contact the Argentine embassy here in the US to try to get a student visa? I'd actually like to stay in Argentina for several years so I'd like a visa that last for quite a while.

How did you get your visa, amy?

If anyone knows anything about dorms, please let me know.

There are a lot of "Residencias de estudiantes" in town... check http://www.ba-h.com.ar/Residences.htm just to have an idea...
Good luck!

This is what I found as far as the Spanish classes for foreigners at that University. It looks like a really great deal. Maybe I am reading it wrong, though.

http://www.idiomas.filo.uba.ar/extranjeros/espanol/cursos/regulares.htm

here is the part I was impressed with. Basically I read it as one can take a 15 hour a week class for a month for AR$570. That's like US$3 per hour. And they get cheaper if you enroll in an additional class. I've looked at studying spanish in BsAs and it has always been much more expensive.
