|
|
Hi everyone,
I am hoping to find a job in Mexico but would really appreciate some advice.
First, Im not sure where to look -- I know I dont want to live in Mexico City but would be very interested to hear suggestions about other regions that are nice to live and work.
Second, I wondered if Mexico is a country where its best to just move there and worry about finding a job, dealing with visas, etc. once Im there, or if it is best to get a firm job offer/contract before leaving the States.
Thanks for your help! |

Hi,
First of all. The best way to find a job is just to go and look when you are their. In the bigger cities have the most English schools so the most chance to find one. There are some smaller places that are also famous for a lot of English schools. Guanaguato is one of them.
If you made your choice where to go look at the mexican yellow pages where the english schools are. The link of the mexican yellow pages is.
http://www.seccionamarilla.com.mx/
Also a good thing is to buy the newspapers and look in the ads. Here in GDL where i live you can place a free ad your self on a newspaper called Mural on fridays.
Voor GDL there are also some websites where you can look. An example is.
http://www.mexplaza.com.mx
Here you can also can place an ad for free.
In GDL i met various teachers looking for work and all the people I met found one. Payment is not great but you can live from it.
You can stay in Mexico on your tourist visa for 180 days. Then you have to change your status. A lot of school dont cooperate with getting you a working visa. Sometimes when you stay there for more than 3 months they will help you with this.
I live in GDL but there are a lot of places where you can go to. For work I only have experience with GDL so I cant recommend you an other place.
Good luck,

Thank you for the hints! Ill definitely take a look at those sites. It just makes me so nervous to move to a new country without any solid job offer...Im overly skittish, I suppose. |

I don't know about other countries, but in Mexico a solid job offer ahead of time doesn't necessarily mean you will find the job waiting for you when you arrive. A very qualified candidate may have walked up in person and been handed your job, especially if you weren't due to arrive for a few weeks. Just something to be aware of. Mexico is very much a personal face to face business type of country. |

In the first place I think our permission to stay in Mexico without a visa is 90 days. The last time I came in it was. If you like the smaller city, Ciudad Guzman is hiring teachers at IECTC and they pay better than the average. Is good to come here and look around but doesn't hurt to do some research before you come. |

What you received WAS a visa--a tourist visa, effective for a maximum of 180 days. |

Yes you can stay on a tourist visa 180 day but standard they give you 90 days and then you have to extend this for 210 pesos at the immigration office.

Your the first one that I heard of getting 180 days. I only know one other guy and he got his 180 days because he filled his form out him self.

It varies, depending on the official who stamps your card. When I first came to Mexico a year ago, I left the field blank and the agent filled in only 30 days.
I've been told that you can write in 180 in the days field of your tourist card and the agent will usually not have a problem with this |

When I entered last year asked for 180 days and the rude woman gave me a bunch of crap and wanted to know what I was going to do in Mexico for that amount of time. She finally gave it to me, but I had to argue with her first. |

Tell them you are writing a book about Emiliano Zapata or Pancho Villa. They will tell you what avid readers of history they are, and give you whatever you want. |

LOL, I'll ask my wife to try that one next time they start making her jump through hoops for a Mexican visa. Do you think it would also work if the book was on Mexican Cuisine, which is more in her line of interest? |

Why not? They can tell her what great eaters they are. |
