Hello everyone!

I am completely new at ESL but I'm very eager to jump into this. I've decide that, all things considered, Japan would probably be my best bet for a good initial foray into gaining ESL teaching experience (as well as the experience of living outside of the U.S.). I've completed an on-line ESL course (i-to-i.com), so I guess I have at least a little notion of how to go about this for the first time (although I admit that it's likely that an on-line certificate is close to useless...but, mabe not. I don't know). Anyway, I already have my B.S. (from U.C. San Diego; which might be a bit of a plus since I read an article that the Japanese look favorably on U.C. schools) and I'm looking to get this whole thing started. I would be highly interested in and grateful for any good advice, comments, etc. that all you fine experienced ESL teachers would have for me. I'm a white male, 6'2" 200lbs, 38 y.o. (I feel strange giving out this personal information but it's my understanding that these criteria matter a fair amount). Anyone out there who wishes to give me their two cents (or more)? I'd love to hear from you!

Thank you!!!!!

Two major points I would make:

1. Read the FAQs here, as well as on www.teachinginjapan.com , www.eltnews.com (actually called Teaching Guide links on the first page), and anything on www.ohayosensei.com aside from the ads, plus read http://thejapanfaq.cjb.net .

2. Decide whether you can come here to apply for work, or if you have to do it from the USA. Coming here is expensive (figure on US$4000 to support yourself for a couple of months while you job hunt), but you open yourself to more opportunities. Staying in the USA to apply is cheaper, but there are only about a dozen places that come to the States to interview prospective teachers AND provide visa sponsorship. Part of your decision will also be based on what sort of time frame you have to come here. There are dead times for hiring.

Once you've done these two things, fire away with any specific questions. You are basically looking at two kinds of jobs: Conversation school (eikaiwa) or ALT (whether through the JET Programme or a dispatch outfit or board of education).
