I am looking into teaching English in Vietnam, but do not have my TEFL certifcation (I have a B.S. and teaching credential). I found a very cost effective online program (http://www.teflonline.com/tf/students/faqs.htm) but I'm unsure if this will be accepted by most schools.

Does anyone know more about this?
Will it be accepted?
What are other alternatives?
Does the school year in Vietnam typically start in September?

I wouldn't bother with an online TEFL and since you have a teaching credential you probably won't need one anyway.
If your going to do a TESOL look for a month course with 120 hours and 6 hours observed teaching practice.

You may not really need more than that for most TEFL positions. (please see my PS at the bottom!)

Not all Distance TEFL courses are equal; [i.e., some have an accreditation of some sort, some don't; some are only 60 hours, some are 120 hours; some offer an observed teaching practicum, some don't; and some carry a higher price tag and 'brand name recognition' (Trinity College, Cambridge Distance DELTA, University of Southern Queensland, Penn State, St. Mary's College, Drexel University, etc) while the cheaper ones are often more or less unknown]



Q11.1: How about Distance TEFL courses? Do you personally recommend this approach?

A11.1: The general consensus of opinion is that doing an onsite course is better, if you have that option.

Online courses can be rewarding & worthwhile, but there are 3 questions to consider before signing up:

#1. accreditation (please refer to links #2, #3, #4, #5 & #6 below for related information on this topic!)

#2. the lack of observed classroom training (note: some courses do offer an observed practicum!)

#3. the question of acceptance of online certificates by potential employers. Please be aware that some employers state clearly in their adverts that they do not recognize TEFL certificates earned online. Read 'some' employers; not all.

Good Afternoon Kent,

I have been sending out some e-mails trying to get a better understanding of the accreditation process and what it really means here in Vietnam. I happened across ITTT (www.teflonline.net) which says that it is 100% on-line. I sent an email to ITTT and both IATQoO and IATEFL to get some answers. IATEFL says that ITTT was once a member, but their membership has ran out. IATQuO was more positive. Neither could tell me if accreditation even matters in Vietnam.

I can recommend the ITTT online course since its accreditation is almost complete. The course should give you the background knowledge of the grammar and phonology of english that you may lack, as well as information on the basic theory and techniques underlying the teaching and learning of English. The experience that you have gained over the last three years plus successful completion of the online course should make you a strong candidate for future TEFL assignments. On completion of the online course, you may well feel it worthwhile to compete the ten day practical attachment at their centre in Phuket.

I don't see ITTT, IATQuO, or IATEFL in your collection of links and wanted to know your opinions of these 3 organizations if you are familiar with them. I already have over 4000 hours of in class ESL experience and can't really see dropping 1500$ for an on site course and lose the opportunity to work for a month. Is 1-to-1 Online TEFL one that you would recommend since it is one of the original online courses and has accredited by ODLQC for many years?

In terms of IATEFL -

They are absolutely legit

& you'll find their link within

the TEFL Worldwide category

on The Master Index.


As far as I am aware, IATEFL does not

actually 'accredit' TESOL certificate courses.

They offer membership - but that isn't

quite the same as accreditation.


ITTT is listed within the Thailand TEFL Cert links

since they offer a resident course on Phuket.

I guess I should add them to the online

links as well. OK, just did it.


In terms of a personal online favourite,

I'd recommend Jeff Mohamed's course

but as you already mentioned above;

you don't really need it.


With your experience, I think I'd either go for

a diploma course (The Distance DELTA, for example)

or a rock solid MA TESOL program at a university,
