|

I'm in teh process of applying for a TEFL job in the UK, teaching in the summer. I've got some questions about this.
-How early do I have to apply to secure a job? No later than February?
-What's the best place to view job ads?
-Is there any possibility of continuing work after the summer at the school where I end up working? What's normally the case? Most of the courses seem to be just 2-10 weeks in length, but I'm looking for something longer. Also I wouldn't like to change jobs in the middle of the summer.
Replies much appreciated! |

Timing of recruitment at summer schools seems to be a fairly fluid affair and the schools often seem to recruit right up to (and after!) the last minute.
As to continueing employment, you should bear in mind that a lot of the summer schools just hire premises for the summer, often boarding schools with residential accommodation. Demand for teachers drops right off after this.
I presume you have the right to work in the UK, although I'm not sure whether the usual visa regulations apply for such short term work, and whether there might be the odd fly-by-night school who doesn't care anyway. Perhaps you could come in as a student and then teach! |

Hi,
I taught at a summer school in the UK last year, but I'm a UK citizen. I had two interviews from the three jobs I applied for, in June. I tried to apply in March/April, but was told by numerous schools that by the the time the summer came my CV would at the bottom, or near the bottom of the pile, due to the influx they expected to receive. They all told me that it's better to apply towards May.
Like anywhere else though, there are good and bad schools in the UK. Sometimes the money can be good, but the amount of hours can seem quite daunting, with lots of social activities in the evening.
I don't know your background, but I agree with Sue; all the posts I applied for required a UK passport.
Good Luck,

I'd forget the whole thing if I were you. I've worked for four different companies and three of them were complete and utter nightmares. You are expected to work an 8 hour day teaching and then run around with the kids in the afternoon and evening before planning for the next day. Expect about 18 hours a day with one day a week off. The last two jobs I had were in management of summer schools. The first was OK but that was non-residential. The second was a complete joke. All the teachers and specialist staff (tennis coaches etc) had been recruited on a VERY different basis of what they had to do. They point blank refused to do what they had not agreed to do and went to the pub. I resigned rather than take responsibility for the safety issues (ie it was a very unsafe environment, no insurance etc etc etc).

Swindells Harry is right. Most employers on these summer schools are very dodgey. Terms and conditions of employment are not good and in many cases you could end up with minimum wage. Get a summer job with the Parks Department of the local council. It will pay better and you will have a better union ! |

Well, they can't get any worse than my current employers... my current employers have given me no induction, I've had to wait for my wages for weeks, even months, they hadn't told me about all the paper work that I had to do to get the money, have given me almost no materials to work with...
The UK employers can't get any worse than that! And the pay will be a lot better that what I'm getting at the moment: at 200/ a week + accommodation and full board I'll be very rich and happy!! That is, if they do pay it every week like they say they do..
I know that it'll be very hard work, but I've been working very hard throughout the year anyway, sacrificing most nights and weekends, so there won't be much of a difference! And it will be less stressful working with a bunch of multinational kids groups than it is teaching monolingual groups here! |
