Hello everyone:

I am going to return home and have the chance for a stopover at no additional cost in Taipei. So the $64 question is, "Is there anything to do and see in Taipei or anyplace else on the island that would make it worth it?" I'm generally interested in historical places and not too interested in anything religious (such as shrines or temples) though big stautes are a kick in the pants Smile

Any help would be appreciated...I think the layover is only good for 48 hours though...Thanks a bunch....
Dave

If you like or are interested in Chinese artefacts, The National Palace Museum holds the world's largest collection. The collection is huge. It would take you more than two days to really see what is currently on display. Most of the collection was brought over from the mainland.

A truly remarkable exhibition of Chinese art and culture. A must see for anyone coming to Taiwan.

A more accurate term would be stolen and the the KMT has until this day refused to return all the pilfered artifacts. The current government is using them as a bargaining chip effectively holding the vast majority of China's most valued art and cultural artifacts hostage.

It might be a good idea to remember that, stolen or not, had those artifacts remained on the mainland, most of them would have been destroyed. Britain and other countries stole many artifacts from China during imperialism, many of which are still in their museums today. No doubt this wasn't right and the artifacts ought to be returned, but aren't those artifacts part of the Taiwanese legacy as well? And you can't ignore the fact that their actions inadvertantly played a part in saving them.
