If the school has a web site, then print out the CHINESE home page and show it to the driver.
If not and if the school will be or has sent ypu something in the mail, cut out the return address and use it to show the driver.
But really, picking up the teacher at the airport is one of the school's responsibilities. Now, does the city have an airport that you can fly in from HK, Shanghai, or Beijing? If not, then you are really going to need to tell the school to get you.

They will pick you from the nearest airport or railaway station.
Poor or not, they will have a van or car, not a donkey cart ( - for the VIP's of the school to be driven around in too).
Ask them what they will arrange for you.
Happy travels

For those who go to teach in HUNAN province, the nearest airport with international connections no doubt is GUANGZHOU; some fly in to HONG KONG, which is just 140 kms further south.
From there, you can continue by comfortable airconditioned hard-sleeper train. Guangzhou to CHangsha takes about 12 hours (or thereabout); it's 700 kms. |

You can fly from HK to Changsha on a Chinese airline. I fly out of China that way when I travelled. Check with a good travel agent. If you can't read Chinese you will not be able to book the flight on-line. |

If your school does not have the decency to help you when you arrive, I would rethink accepting the position. Doesn't sound like they care much. Indifference can be tortuous, given the right circumstances. |
