Hi all! I just recently got certified as an esl teacher in Canada and I have some important questions about all things saudi related.
1. I have started applying in july, how soon can I hear a response?
2.How long does it take for the visa to get processed?
3. If i don't have a bachelor's which is english related, will I have any bumps or hurdles along the way?
Hope to hear from all the experienced teachers out there! |

Unless your BA or MA is in something English related, such as Applied Linguistics, English, TESOL, etc, you will not be able to get a legal work visa to go to Saudi Arabia from Canada. If you do have one of those, disregard. Also, if you're female, certain universities like PNU have ways around it according to what I'm hearing.
Its normal to wait long periods of time for Saudi employers. Sometimes they may ignore you for months and just when you've given up they'll contact you. Make sure you search the forum and find a reputable employer. |

Hi cherrybomb, if that is your real name.
Malisef, Canadians, now like Americans and possibly soon to be Brits, need an English related degree. I personally don't know any way around that other than a high ranked prince intervening on your behalf at the Saudi Embassy in Ottawa. Maybe you can go back to the university you graduated from and ask them what they require to get a diploma changed to one that suits Saudi standards. I know this requires more time and money, but you have time I presume if you are young. As for money well.....Korea takes newly graduated students and will help you make some money while your at it. Also,Taiwan has universities that offer MAs in TESL. I applied at Payap university and was accepted two years ago, but I decided to ride it out here. I've also heard that Payap and other reputable universities are accepted worldwide.

Ps. Sorry that's all I can assist you with my Canadian friend |

Obviously, you should be applying for those positions that match your qualifications (e.g., degree, TEFL cert, and X number of years of teaching experience). And if you get an interview, that's your golden opportunity to ask those questions. |

Thanks for replying, btw cherry bomb is not my real name, it is just something that I thought of quickly, I now realize that cherry bomb has some clear overtones thanks for everyone for replying back to me, I have decided to share some details with everyone.
1. I am a women of colour, religion: muslim, age: lets say I'm not thinking of writing a bucket list yet.
2. what countries could I save some money and would be welcoming to me based on my characteristics? |

The "where can I save some money" question has been discussed at length over the past 9 or so months in the general and newbie forums; I suggest you check those forums out.
But instead of focusing on your characteristics, what are your qualifications---that is, your education, teacher training certificate, and number of years of experience and the type(s) of teaching situation(s) you've taught in? If you have zero teaching experience, scratch this region off your list. |

Someone down at "The Saracen's Head" just told me that to get a visa you need to have converted to the One True Faith. Short Arm Inspection required of all male candidates. |

I don't think Thailand would be unwelcoming. They have Thai muslims in Thailand teaching in schools. Also you would make some savings in Thailand if you're frugal. Based on your lack of experience and non-English related or non-Education degree, I don't think you'll be able to get anything in KSA or The Emirates etc.
Thailand or SE Asia in general can give you substantial years of experience and is actually a lot more pleasant than the Middle East (If they paid more in Thailand, nobody would bother being here).
Actually come to think of it, why not try Korea. There you can make substantial savings. Just be real careful and spend some time on the Korean forum looking at the job related posts. The problem is in Korea if you get stuck with a Hagwon you detest or one that just is going to plain screw you over that's it until your E-2 visa expires. Of course you could try Korea and if you're unlucky enough to belong to the 20% or so of people that get screwed just move on to Thailand.
Be careful, you have to arrive at these places with some money to live off of back home or move on to another country.

Regulars in "The Dog and Duck" swear blind that visas are now restricted to those who have memorised the Koran. |
