Hi--
I've been reading a lot of the posts here and it's been pretty helpful figuring out whether or not I should move to Taiwan. From what I've read it seems like some people manage to save nothing or a lot and I was looking at Taipei (I've been in a pretty isolated part of the mainland for the past year, need a break from the backwater) but sounds like Taipei, being most expensive, is the hardest to save in. Any cities in or around Taipei, or on Taiwan, that are reasonably sized (not too isolated) that might also be worth considering ?
And when will schools hiring for September generally start advertising?
Thanks a bunch. |

Tan Sui (Dan shui).
It is small port city located just outside of Taipei.
The local county government has been putting a lot of money and effort into making Tan Sui a decent place to visit.
It is conveniently located at the farthest end of theTaipei MRT Line which will allow you to commute to and from Taipei cheaply and quickly.
Rent is a little lower but the weather is a little colder in the winter as well.
Saving money is becoming a problem for all new teachers as wages and working conditions continue to deteriorate island wide.
Good luck!

Most schools have already started advertising for the new semester. New semesters also start at odd times. A lot of the buxibans, private cram schools, run a 6-month semesters. They will start in July and August. Although, most will hire through out the year.
Looking at the ads. will give you a general idea about what is happening and the average pay currently offered. However, the best jobs in terms of hours and pay are found through other people or 'pounding the pavement'. If you want to find a job you should consider coming to TW with an interview or two set up, but very few people recommend signing the contract before you arrive. Coming to TW and find a job after arrival is general the best option.
I live in Hsin-chu. It's right on the main train line under an hour from Taipei. It's safe, inexpensive, and there are plenty of jobs. There is a thriving expat community so meeting other people will not be difficult. It is a medium size city. I think its big by comparison to my home town. Every modern convenience can be found here. Travel to other part of TW is easy and affordable.
Good luck |
