Found this one this site http://www.esljunction.com/jobs/about4515.html
under the "Grey List" section:

Avoid this school like the plague. The boss is the most dishonest person I have ever met in my life. i was told to add more info or my post will be deleted. OK. First, the owner is a liar. From my first week there she told lies; strange lies. For example, a student had asked me to attend a function that her club had organized. I told her I would be honored to. Well, the owner didn't want me to go (I don't know why) so she told me that it was cancelled and told the student I didn't want to go, but that she had another teacher that wanted to go. So, when I asked the student why it was cancelled she told me that the owner said that I didn't want to go. When I confronted the owner about this, she said the student didn't really want me to go. The student ASKED me to go!
Next, the owner takes littlle hidden deductions from your salary. For example, the car insurance money is misrepresented. It is supposed to be for after hours driving. However, when a teacher was in a car accident that was after work hours, he was forced to pay the whole repair bill. Next, I and other teachers were charged for our phone line even though the school didn't own it and was not paying any money for it. She claimed she was paying for part of our phone bill on hers, but when I called the NTT people, they said this was not true and that the line belonged to me as i had bought it and paid for it. Next, she charged a rental fee to some teachers for an air conditioner that was bought by the previous teacher. There are many more such examples.
Next is the good teacher penalty. If you do a good job at SES you will get the most difficult classes and the longest hours and the most (uncompensated) driving time. Mediocrity is rewarded. You will be paid the same salary regardless of your work hours as the teacher who just turns up to class on time and smiles alot. A hint about the good teacher penalty is offered in their ad. A master's degree is preferred and additional language ability is a plus. However, you are not given a higher salary for having more ability, you are given more and more difficult classes than teachers without these qualifications.
Furthermore, the boss treats women terribly. She often bullies them and always sends us to businessmen classes and advertises us as if we were hostesses.
The boss loves busy work. She always seems to have some rush proofreading job that has to be done today. Fair enough. But, then she gives the same proofreading to a different teacher everyday even though it had been done by several teachers already. She once had two teachers retype a whole textbook (can you say plagiarism?).
The list goes on and on. |
Sounds like a type of Japanese retard owner situation! Many of these yellow trash decided in the 80's they could get rich through "eigo no businessu" but never actually studied up on or took a serious interest in what it takes to make it happen..
They may have fooled many intially but the times have changed so they just try to cheat teachers to make up their defects as people and resulting lack of business! |

I knew some people who worked there a few years back. Yes, they had complaints about the owner, but there were also good points to the job (being given a car which you can use in your free time, not having to be at the school when you don't have classes) and despite the downsides, most of them were quite happy with their life in Japan. In fact, I know several people who returned to work there for a second stint after having returned to their home countries. So it can't have been that bad for everyone. One of the teachers there was the biggest complainer about Japan and teaching that I have ever met. but he was also by all accounts the worst teacher. If I remember correctly, the "good teacher" theory of the last post is probably true. in that the complaining guy had the lightest schedule possible! Not the best school in the world, but probably not as bad as has been made out by some. |

Well if the car had no insurance I wouldn't call it a good point especially if there's an accident.
What about all of the deductions for stuff, NTT phone line, air-conditioner the company doesn't even own? |

Well, the cars are insured, and it sounds like the teachers pay for insurance, which you would guess must be for after hours driving (as insurance for driving in work hours must surely be the responsibility of the school) so the school refusing to pay that is obviously wrong.
As for the phones and air-con - all I know is that the teachers I knew bought their phone lines from other teachers and the school had absolutely nothing to do with it, so not sure what happened in this case. Nobody I knew paid the school for air-con, either. Now, I'm by no means saying that this school has no problems, nor even trying to defend it - I'm just saying that you can't treat complaints on the Internet as gospel. As I said before, the teachers I knew had complaints about the owner, but they didn't include anything to do with phone lines or air-con, and those people were generally happy with their time there. The biggest complaint I heard was about the "busy work" they were given. Perhaps the situation has worsened, and it really is that bad now - I don't know - but I'm just sharing what I knew of the school about five or six years ago or so. |
