Are you getting bugged with all those annoying pop-ups that appear from nowhere on your computer?
The other day, I downloaded a pop-up stopper program which worked beautifully at first - it would tell me when a pop-up was trying to enter my computer and it had been blocked but if I wished to view it then I was to hold down the control button.
OK, fine - until I went to connect to the internet the next time to find "no go" with a message, "Cannot find server" - apparently, the pop-up stopper program had altered my computer settings and I couldn't get connected to my server.
So after a 45 minute session with an IT technician, I was finally back online.
Has anyone experienced similar problems and does anyone know of a good way to stop those annoying pop-ups that have no bad side effects?

Dear Ealaine,
Pop up stoppers need to be configured properly. A pop up is a program that starts in a new window. If you click on Dave's linls at the top of the page they are all coded in HTML to start in a new window, and so will be caught by the crudest form of pop up stopper.

Opera comes with a pop up stopper built in, and I think there are other web browsers that do the same. As you have found out there are plenty of freeware programs that can do this. You should read the tutorials though since they will all need training.

The most irritating are pop unders, which only show after you have closed the main window.

Best advice is probably to iginore sites that have popups

just a bit off the subject, but along the same lines, I recently downloaded the (free) Ad-Aware 6.0 from Lavasoft. So far I'm really pleased with it. What it does is scan your hard drive (or any other specified drives for that matter) and locates unwanted Scumware, keyloggers, Dialers, Aggresive Advertising, tracking cookies, trojans, browser hijackers etc. etc.

You might be surprised what kind of stuff you find!
