I have recently decided to find a position teaching English in Shanghai, and the amount of information I have found is overwhelming. I was wondering if anyone had any basic advice. I have a B.A. in English and a graduate degree in law, but I have no teaching experience. From what I have seen, due to my lack of teaching experience, it would probably be a good idea to take TEFL course of some kind (Ive heard that CELTA is the best). Im not willing at this point to go over to China without having secured a position.
Specifically, I was wondering if:
1) The market in Shanghai is good for someone with my credentials;
2) Whether there are certain times of the year that are better for finding a job (specifically, whether I should look for jobs that coincide with the semester system in China);
3) The names of any reputable job placement organizations;
4) What I can expect from a prospective employer (salary, will they reimburse me for airfare, should I expect them to pay for housing and healthcare, assistance in getting a VISA/work permit, etc.);
5) Whether its realistic to expect to be able to get a job before I make the trip to Shanghai;
6) The advantages of public v. private schools; and
7) What kind of hours per week I should expect to work.
Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh |
