I got my police record check done, and something from 1994 when i was 17 appeared on it! It says that i received a two year good behaviour bond for recklessly causing injury to a person when i opened a car door drunk and hit someone - I thought these blanked after ten years??
Anyways, i asked the visa people and they told me that it shouldnt be a problem but that its up to the school i work for.
SInce its so long ago - will it be an issue?

I dont think that you have too much to worry about.

According to this the visa office doesnt have a problem with it, and if they dont, and you get issued a visa, then you can safely file the record away. To my knowledge, very few schools here in Taiwan require a police record check for teaching positions. So if you were unlucky enough to apply to a school that did, and they rejected your application for the fact that you did have a record, well there are plenty of other opportunities.

Police record checks are not generally part of the process of securing a visitors visa to come to Taiwan, but some of the TECO offices seem to have been playing by different rules recently. You may find that they dont even require the check when it comes time to actually applying for your visa.

Phew! It was a big surprise to see that appear after so long. So if i find work and then they sponsor me for a resident visa you dont think that most schools will even require a police check? I was going to go with Hess, but they seem to require it.

Hess is one of the few schools that does ask for criminal history checks. They haven't always done so, but I commend them for taking this step. They are the sort of school that processes a quantity of applicants and therefore they can afford to lose a few possibles if these people can't or don't want to comply with this. You might want to contact them directly and ask them whether your situation would be a problem.

If it is then there are plenty of other schools that won't even ask.
