Got any?
But seriously, I'm trying to get from San Antonio, TX, to Tuxtla Gutierrez in mid-November. The plan is to fly to DF and take a bus the rest of the way...or fly to a city farther south if I can find something cheaper & then the bus...or take a bus all the way...oh geez I just don't know.
Right now I can fly to Veracruz for $273 or fly to DF from Houston for $180. Do you think prices will go down after the summer? Does anyone even care about my silly dilemma? Any advice will be appreciated, thanks! |

There's a new highway from Mexico City to Tuxtla Gtz. Private cars make the drive in around 8 hours, buses in 12. Not bad considering what it used to be... |

Why not take the bus all the way? It can't be that bad? I was going to take it all the way from Vancouver, B.C. but then I won a trip to Vegas. So i'm going to spend a few nights there first and then bus down to Puerto Vallarta from Vegas instead.
And if taking a bus all that way really is a bad idea, please let me know! |

No, taking the bus isn't that bad, just a long trip. You'll find the 1st class buses in Mexico to be infinitely more comfortable than the Greyhound buses in the States. |

Yeah, like 30+ hours... yeesh, no thanks. First class or not, that would be sheer torture.
If you do take the bus, plan to take a couple of lengthy stops to play tourist along the route. |

Well call me crazy, but I just took the bus all the way from from Toronto Canada to Mexico City! No stops....blitzed my way right through, lol. I arrived looking pretty haggard but happy. Its not for the faitnhearted..but I loved seeing all the scenery and meeting some VERY interesting people along the way. It was a great trip! I got the GO ANYWHERE pass from Canada Greyhound....paid 200.00 canadian for a return ticket ( Toronto to Matamoros-I will have to use the return portion within a month for it to be valid) and then paid 71.00 USD for a one way to Mexico City.
I don't think the USA Greyhound has this deal, but I do know you can save loads of dough by booking even a week or so in advance.
Happy Trails.....

I have no qualms whatsoever about taking "foreano" (inter-city) buses in Mexico. I wouldnt be caught dead on Greyhound now. I used to use Greyhound a lot as a college student in the early 80's but the last time I used it, in 1988, I was sitting in front of two "gentlemen" who were having a really lovely (whispered) conversation about thier little drug business. (Please note the intended sarcasm in this statement!)
On Mexican buses, most of who you see are just regular families. A whole heck of a lot better. It is also cheaper and quite convenient and they go to just about every little town there is in the country. |

Greyhound has improved in some areas. I took it from Spokane to Seattle last October and it was fine. |

well, total cost would be...
One way Toronto to Mexico City= 289.00 Canadian
( but this includes return trip from Matamoros to Toronto) If you then include a return trip -Matamoros from Mexico City (71 usd}88 Can) then the grand total return is= 380.00 Canadian thereabouts...making it less than 200.00 each way.
Ya, I could have got a flight for a bit more, but even a bit more dough goes a long way down here and If I had flown I wouldn`t have seen the following-
1. Loretta Lynn's dude ranch and restaurant, lol (Tennessee)
2. Sun studios where Elvis made his first album ( Memphis)
3. The house Bill clinton was born in ( Hope, Arkansas)
AND!
The breathtaking scenery between Matamoros and Mexico City.
Greyhound is a bit of a rolling detox by times, but so what? Kinda adds to the adventure if you ask me
oh ya.....I also rode the greyhound through Tennessee with about 20 Amish. There was no talk of drugs.

I thought I was alone in doing the insanely long bus journey.
I took the bus from Queretaro to Prince Albert, Sask.
It took 5 days all told. I did stop 1 night in a hotel before leaving Mexico.
The coolest thing was I bought an "ameripass" - 3 day bus ticket (only available in Mexico I believe) $99 US, you can travel anywhere in the US, any way you want for that price. (that was back in 2000) I don't know if they still offer that deal.
I would have made it across the states in 3 days, but I didn't understand the bus routes. I made the mistake of getting off the first bus when I should have stayed on.......... this caused further reprocussions and delays on down the line and I ended up spending hours on end sitting in bus depots in Dallas and then in Chicago.
Then I had to buy a ticket for the final leg between Minneapolis and Winnipeg because my 3 days were up.
I would not do it again though, unless I was really strapped for cash.
I would travel anywhere in Mexico by bus, but I don't think I would want to travel by bus in the states again. Nothing to do with the bus service either, I have never met so many rude and inconsiderate people at one time in my life before that trip.
I was so relieved to cross the border into Canada. |

Wow, sorry to hear about the rude people-not my experience at all. I love travelling in the States....my only complaint is that when it gets crowded our good American pals tend to be on the larger side and the lack of space sucks.
Still , kudos on the 5 day adventure! Thanks for the tip about that Mexican pass as well, I may just grab that tomorrow if it's still available.
Anyways, my business in Mexico City is over for now. I LOVED this city and am making definite plans to return. Now I am heading to beautiful Texas for a spell......and yes- I am taking the BUS!
lol

So how many days was the trip from Toronto to Mexico City then? And with this pass that you bought you could get on and off whenever and wherever you wanted within a certain amount of days? That's such a great deal. I don't know if I could handle that long on the bus, but with stops here and there through the states it might actually be a pretty cool trip to take! I guess you don't really save all that much though if you are buying food and paying for hotels every night??? |

It looks like bus all the way right now. Maybe we'll stop for a couple days in...Veracruz? Undecided still. This will be in mid-late November. Suggestions?
Also, Greyhound does have some info online about the passes - -
