Hi,

I am just wondering if anyone can tell me if it is at all possible to work in these countries with just TESOL certification. I don't mind teaching kids, adults ot TOEFL, I just want to know if I can actually teach in Aust. or NZ (preferably NZ) and if they have language schools.

Thanks for any help Smile

Trent

I am actually from New Zealand and was back home in February (I work overseas) and looking into teaching positions in Auckland. A degree is not really a requirement but more schools ask for a teaching diploma such at Cambridge Trinity, or a CELTA. There is actually a huge shortage of teachers in Auckland at the moment but pay is about $20-25 an hour for part time work. In Queen St alone in the central part of Auckland there are over 190 schools, I have been told, to cater for the large influx of Korean Taiwanese and Asian students. Where are you interested in working? On eofmy friends from japan runs a very successful language school in Queenstown, but a lot will depend on your nationality and ability to get a work visa.

PAULH,

thanks for the quick reply,

I am an Australian citizen, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. I have the TESOL degree with specialisations in teaching adults and the TOEFL, form International Teach and Travel. I was hoping to try and find a job in Wellington or surrounding areas, but hey if it was possible to find work in Auckland I wouldn't knock it back; preferably somewhere on the North Island.

Trent
my advice would be to do a search on the web by typing in "Teaching English in New Zealand" or ESL in New Zealand etc and there are many links to language schools all over the country. I dont know much about wellington, but I know many jobs are in auckland, ChristchurchQueenstown as that is where all the students are. I believe there are something like 30,000 students in Auckland alone studying English. One of the high schools on the north shore there has about a 30% foreign student population.

Im not sure what the visa situation is for aussies travelling to New Zealand but I imagine you shouldnt have any problem.

When i went back I found there was tons of work to choose from (I have an MEd in TESOL) but coming from Japan where I am now working the pay even for fulltime is very low, tax rates are extortionate and the cost of living, accomodation and food is quite high in Auckland. However the laidback lifestyle, the outdoors etc appeals to many people working there.

Let me know if you need more info

Hi there,

I currently live in Wellington, NZ - a local I guess you could say. Probably the best place to start the hunt for jobs is by contacting the Capital Language Academy down on Courtenay Place: [email protected]

They are mainly a CELTA based outfit and appear to be the main private language school here.

If they can't provide work, I'm sure they will be able to suggest other schools to get in contact with.

I've been told there's a bit of a slump at the moment, but it will swing upwards soon - just the nature of the industry.

Trent is absolutely on the ball with the need for teachers in Auckland.

But from personal experience, Wellington is the better location due to the mini-city environment. It is a far friendlier city than Auckland, and living here is a little cheaper. Very Happy

All the best.

I wasn't sure what you meant exactly but you can get a job with TESOL Cert if you have a degree too. In fact, one of the places I worked at employed someone with just a degree (but he got less pay than the rest of us). Sydney doesn't have a lot of work around at the moment but that could change.

It's exactly the same as kiwis going and working in Oz: no problems what so ever. No visa, either.

Try looking for Select Education - don't know the url but it is probably the obvious. They are primarily a temp agency in Aust & NZ.
