Japan is rampant with various scams in EFL. Some are blatant and some more subtle.
The conditions are unfortunately ripe for exploitation in this country due to the lax enforcement of laws and even more lax support for the plight of foreign workers in Japan.
If there is a specific company or such that you have a question about, post it and I'm sure one of us can give you helpful information. |

There are a few companies that engage in morally reprehensible or questionable behavior, and it may also help to define what you mean by a "scam" . I have seen large chain schools referred to as scams, but this is from newly arrived people from outside the country who bring their cultural and ethnocentric baggage with them and believe companies doing business in Japan should act like companies in the US. (Ever hear of World com and Enron?)
As long as companies here are acting within Japanese law, are not doing anything illegal ( some do in aspects of their operations though perhaps an affront to its western or American employees) it can not really be considered a scam. Morally duplicitous and underhand maybe, but not illegal. Thats why it pays to read the contract carefully and know what you are buying into when you sign on.
I'm not referring to the genuine scams (Bearcat and I are aware of a few serious offenders) but to the large chain schools that often attract a lot of criticism for their unethical business practices but do not set out to intentionally deceive or defraud their employees. |
