I think you may be asking a bit late. By now the majority of Gulf teachers have probably hit the road or are too busy packing to go to be online...

hey globalnomad,
Okay, let's see if I can help as the previous reports about SUC do not paint a pretty picture, but be reassured that surely for somewhere so 'bad' it can only improve, right?
Wrong.
Quick recap of the recent info that I am aware of from ex-colleagues...
The Dean doesnt care about the college he is just waiting out his 2 year contract before he and his family escape. He complains about how much he dislikes Sur and how he has no power at SUC (true). So to compensate he makes memos about the slightest thing and issues to all staff (killing hundreds of trees in the process- yet teachers have to sign for blocks of paper to do necessary photocopying; necessary because they wont buy enough books for the students). He is a control freak who manages the smallest thing to make himself feel better eg you are only allowed one print cartridge a semester and that has to be signed for by him.
Staff turnover - over 36 in 3 years. They will not do exit interviews as 'they' in muscat dont care why people leave as there are plenty more on tefl.com etc looking for employment.
DoS - lasted 3 weeks before giving her resignation. As an existing member of staff she knew what she was getting into and thought she could cope. It only took 3 weeks to disprove that.
Organisation - summer school was cancelled at the last minute. No one seems clear why as many students were eager to go. Some say it was lack of organisation some say it was funding issues.
Sur - not as bad as some make out. Quiet yes. If you are female you will get stared at tremendously (by the indians more than the omani men in the souk). Social activities - what you can make in your own home, apart from that, none. But, it is very pretty!
As with any tefl job, ask to speak to current teachers who are working there at the moment. You may find you will get a more honest response by telephone call rather than by email as there is less chance of that coming back on them.
But, if you have a thick skin, strong sense of humour and can cope with the changing goal focus (daily!!) - then go for it. |

Ok so admittedly I have been out of it for a while but glad to see the usual moans and groans about SUC are continuing.
For anyone considering it - Sur - as flowerchild said is a very quiet place but it is absolutely beautiful. Myself and colleagues would have stayed for much longer but....................
Management unfortunately was atrocious - unfortunately the 'main man' - a guy by the initials of A.M. (most people should know of him by now) needs to avoided big time. He's also involved in the recruiting for teachers for RAFO as well - I'm sure - for many other projects.
If you need anymore info on this pm me.
From the sounds of it - things haven't really changed......... maybe one day. |
