Hi
I would appreciate any info you could give me. I am considering coming to Mexico to teach. The Doctors say I should go to a hot dry climate and parts of Mexico certainly qualify. I have two questions.

First id there a great deal of age discrimination. I ask because in Taiwan 80% of the jobs go to people under 35.

Second I read that you should have you Certificates certified in your home country. I am not sure what that means or how to do it.

A little background. I was not a teacher before. However I have taught ELS for 7 years now. I am 52. I have taught in Korea, Taiwan, and a short time in China and in the Philippines. I have a TEFL, TESOL, TEYL (Teaching English to young learners) an advanced TEFL and an Advance TESOL.

Also I have written a series of 6 books on teaching children to read using explicit phonics that will be distributed to Taiwan, Japan and Korea in November.

What are the chances of me finding a decent job? I am not trying to get rich. Just pay expenses for another 5 years till I retire

As an aside what is it like teaching in Mexico?

All advice is appreciated
Charles

Charles, I am turning 61 this year--have been teaching EFL in Mexico most of the time since I was 50.

There is age discrimination like crazy for Mexicans seeking work--but it doesn't seem to apply in the TEFL setting.

With your experience and training, you should have little trouble finding work with a decent, reputable school.
And I vastly prefer teaching in Mexico over Asia. (...But that's just MHO...)

First off, no need to check out the area of Mexico where I am if you need a hot dry climate. We definitely qualify for the hot part, but most of the year one can wring the humidity out of the air here.

As for age discrimination, as moonraven pointed out, there are lots of jobs in this country where anyone over 35 need not apply. However, teaching EFL isn't usually one of them. Granted, there are some schools that look for the Ken&Barbie types to hire, but I think for the most part, schools don't discriminate regarding age.

At the university where I teach, the youngest EFL teacher is around 30, the oldest over 60, and most are between 40 and 50. However, if teachers don't have tenure by the age of 45, they aren't going to get it. Since the university provides lifetime pensions and private health care for tenured teachers, it expects to get at least 20 years of service out of them before they retire.
