I had applied to a school (overseas application) and within the same day they called me. The speaker on the phone only knew enough english to say which school they were from, if I had a drivers liscence, if I could get working hol visa and when I could start. When I asked for details about the contract the person said that they were not the boss and would continue conversations by email (I think due to communication problems).
ALARM BELLS GO OFF!
1) Why would a secretary call me about the position?
2) Wouldn't it make sense that the person on the other end of the phone was the boss or someone with a good grasp of the applicant's language to conduct an interview and answer queries? |

Not necessarily. Bosses tend to be busy people and secretaries get a lot of responsibility they can't always handle. As long as those further communications by email happen within the next day or two, go with it. Obviously there's a lot more to be worked out yet, but the fact that you get called first by the secretary isn't by itself something to worry about. |

Well it's been more than two days. No email. No emailed confirmation of a contract. Looks like the school's a dud. |

Geez, don't throw away thoughts of this company just yet! Two days is nothing. You don't even know if the boss is in town or in contact with the secretary to get the news. And, if this is an Asian country, expect matters to work SLOWLY. That's their style.
It might behoove YOU to write an email, thanking them for their phone call. At least this would get the ball rolling on email communication. Who knows? Maybe they're waiting for it anyway. |

Getting an elaborate and well-worded email can often be just as bad a sign. I don't think you can judge a school that well by a phonecall or email, frankly. |

I once asked an FAO (by e-mail) a lot of searching questions about the terms and conditions at her school (in China), and all I got (two days later) was the very simple reply (again by e-mail): "You (sic) salary 5000 rmb/mo. Please reply!" I didn't. |

If you get a reply to an email full of "searching" questions, you're lucky to get one at all and have probably found a desperate school. If a school posts an offer that's at all competitive they'll easily get 20 or 30 replies from native speakers (and perhaps 100 to 150 if you include all the nonnative mailbombers and/or totally unsuitable jerks) and I know that there's no way I'd answer any of those messages if they them had more than two questions that required a sentence long answer apiece. |
