Greetings everyone- Guanajuato query...

I'm traveling from the US to Guanajuato to visit a friend in August. I have some volunteer teaching experience, am presentable/professional, and I speak a little Spanish. Without a teaching certificate, would someone of my general description have a chance at landing a job? From what little research I've had time to do I've surmised that teaching positions are not always easy to come by. Perhaps my timing and presence in-situ will help.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Depends on what you mean by teaching positions....volunteer, or virtually so.

You won't be able to walk two feet in Guanajuato without bumping into a college-age/graduate gringo from Boulder or Houston taking spanish courses and looking for an ESL job. I've been to the most touristy areas of Mexico and never heard as much english spoken by everyone as I did in Guanajuato. Having said that, my friend's son went there last year, loved it, and got a "position" teaching ESL for roughly 25 pesos an hour. He had a trust fund.

I will go with darkhorse on this--except that more English is spoken in San Miguel and in the tourist parts of Quintana Roo.

Unless you have the qualifications to be able to compete for a post at the university, I'd forget about Guanajuato.
