There are a lot of new regulations being applied and the schools are requiring lots of paperword and criminal backgrounds report....just to get started. Bring as much documentation with you as possible.

Is this true! I just left my job in Hanoi and was thinking of going to HCMC for a bit before going back to Thailand. I have my degree and cert but no other paperwork. Is it really necessary now to get the background check BEFORE you start working, or is it only necessary for the work permit? Are schools in HCMC no longer employing people w/o work permits?

Please advise...if I can't start without the background check, then maybe I'll just go directly to Thailand. I can't really afford a long period waiting without work...

Thanks...

It is true that new regulations are being put in place in Vietnam. Work permits, taxes, and criminal records will be required in the coming months. That being said....I have taught in Hanoi for 6 months and you can live here, make money, save money, and have a great time. There are 3 S.I.T.C. schools in Hanoi that are always looking for teachers. SITC 3 in particular. You can expect to make about $13/hour US.
The background checks are particularly difficult for Americans. Word is, the American embassy can not help you on this and you may have to fly home to secure one.

You don't have to fly home, but it has been a long process. To get your criminal record you are likely to have to send a notorized letter requesting it's release to the Vietnamese Consulate, where it has to be translated and verified by the Vietnamese authorities then sent to the Secretary of State (for your State) to verify that the notorization.

Between that, the physical, notorized copies of your degrees and certifications as well as a local criminal check there can be any of a number of stumbling blocks.
