This is inspired by another forum where the topic was stolen from a blog. Five types of foreigners in Turkey?
1. First, there are the Turkish culture enthusiasts or Turkophiles. They came to Turkey to work and study here because they either have a lifelone fascination with Turkish culture or because Turkey interested them in some way. A few may have studied Turkey or Turkish at university. They either speak Turkish well or are learning fast. They travel around the country and are usually the ones who defend Turkey at every opportunity. They are usually difficult to go out for a drink with as you have to watch what you say and they won`t go to ex pat type bars.
2. This group are the ones who came here to try and enrich themselves or get skills that will be valuable in their own country. Medical students at Istanbul university or teflers with get rich schemes like opening their own language school or exporting carpets. You have all met those types.
3. The bohemians who came to get away from the materialism and selfishness of Western culture. They are the ones who say ''Why come to Turkey if you are just going to hang around with foreigners?'' They often get fed up easily and end up leaving for Prague or Thailand, or hanging around with their own type at house parties. ''What about the Kurds?'' they say and think it cool to have a Kurdish partner.
4. The p issheads, potheads and nutters. These are the ones who give teflers and foreigners a bad name. They have no interest in Turks or Turkish culture and are attracted by the cheap beer and pot and the ease of getting a job with fake qualifications and a Western passport. The lack of sanctions against their drunken, student shagging ways makes it all even more attractive.
5. Those who came here just for employment. Professional teflers who came for jobs at international schools or those who work for Multinational companies or the diplomatic corps. These don`t normally associate with teflers and organise things like the British Community Council summer fete. |
