What kind of new job is it? If you are new at the TEFL game, you need to give us a few more details, otherwise just mentioning a "new job" is not really helpful if you want good advice from us grizzled veterans. |

Bring: deodorant, marmite, a digital camera, a mobile phone (which you can adapt when you get over here), CDs of music which you feel might be hard to get hold of
Don't bring: DVDs |

This is how some grizzled veterans' minds work, unfortunately, if you've been imprisoned - sorry, if you've been working - in this country long enough. It gets to you sometimes...
Yes, don't bring DVDs because you can get them dirt cheap - really! People like us have vast collections of DVDs here and then just pass them onto our fellow grizzles when they go back to the primeval forests... |

| Look I call it being practical. A 19 year old guy? There is at least a slight chance that he may have "relations" shall we say. I just watched a FT deported home this week because he was HIV positive. He either contracted the disease in China or Korea. I just never want to see this happen to anyone else. |

| Well im going to be teaching english at Heng Feng Foreign Languages School in Harbin China thank you for letting me know about dvds and such I would have brought them if you hadnt any way can any one tell me anything about the school/city (Harbin) I found the job on Daves. |

But he should bring music, as it's hard to get much in the way of good music, and you have to end up either resorting to illegal channels downloading from the internet, or spending a small fortune in Chinese terms ordering CDs from Amazon, as a certain friend of mine ended up doing recently! |

I used Shareaza and downloaded MP3's (along with other thigns) while I was in Dalian without any problem. Mind you I had a computer in my apartment on campus. I don't even think file-sharing is illegal in China because the Chinese have their own P2P file-sharing software too. |

Well, you can get knocked-off PS2/X Box games here for about 8 yuan. An X Box/PS2 console will set you back about 2000 RMB. Don't know how feasible it is for you to bring yours with you. But you'll be in heaven with the games prices. |

Yeah, I use soulseek. But before I had a different computer without a soundcard, so I couldn't use that, so I didn't have much good music.
But true, I can't imagine that type of filesharing is illegal here given that pirate CDs are everywhere - I often wonder how Chinese singers/performers make any money whatsoever. It must all be from live concerts. |
