BOOKS FOR YOUR OWN STUDY: Start with 500 Basic Chinese Characters, by Zhou Jian, Patrick Lin, and Ching-chou Lu. Then Flash Cards for Elementary Chinese, with 1375 Basic Chinese Characters, edited by Xiao Xiumei, Ou Qichao, and Li Shizhi. Ask one of the local teachers to select a good Chinese-English dictionary. Make sure the words defined are large print. Chinese strokes are much different than English strokes, and difficult to distinguish at first. Try to find one that includes Pinyin. Pinyin is pronunciation of Chinese words using English alphabet, but with a few letters representing different sounds than in English. The ABC Chinese-English Dictionary, by John DeFrancis, is arranged by Pinyin. The Longman English-Chinese Photo Dictionary translation index is arranged by Pinyin. You also need to be aware that some texts use traditional Chinese characters and some use simplified. The Oxford Picture Dictionary uses traditional, the Longman Photo Dictionary uses simplified. For primers on ESL teaching: An Introduction to TEFL, by Catherine Wrangham; Teaching English Overseas, by Sandra Lee McKay, Teaching English as an International Language, by Sandra Lee McKay.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR SCHOOL IS NOT CLOSE TO A GOOD SELECTION OF BOOKS: If you are going to a small town or remote area, ask your school to take you to a couple of large bookstores before leaving for your final destination. When you schedule your travels, allot a few hours to bookstores. If youre not an experienced browser, you may not know that bookstores can be formidable. And bookstores sections are not always labeled in English. So bring a Chinese friend, or a note written in Chinese specifying which titles and types you need. In large cities, ask about foreign language bookstores. Beijing and Shanghai have the best selection. Hong Kong is a disappointment, but try the Page One bookstore.

HOW MANY WORDS A STUDENT SHOULD KNOW: Depends on the need of the student, but 80% of everyday English conversation consists of the 2000 words used in the Collins Cobuild dictionary definitions. How to define vocabulary, how to define word, and how to define know are vigorously debated subjects in linguistic circles. Written vocabulary versus spoken vocabulary. Active vocabulary versus passive vocabulary. Dictionary headwords versus conjugated words, derivatives, and compounds. Pronouns, slang, idioms, colloquialisms, etc. Also, the size of a vocabulary is not an indication of how well a student can pronounce or use words.
