Can anyone offer me any info on what it's like in Santander. I can't find much 'tourist information' about it on the internet, which makes me think perhaps it's not very special. Would it be a good place to live? Have any of you worked there?
If anyone could try and compare it to a city in England (in terms of size, numbers of young people, etc), that would be good. |

Sooopeerb beaches!
Santander and San Sebastian are where the Spanish Middle classes go to holiday in July and August while the idiot North Europeans are working on their skin cancers on the mediterranean costas. No idea what it7s like in winter but quality place in summer.
Close to Bilbao (big city, wicked museum (so I'm told).
All in a thumbs up (but it depends what you want - its not a metroplolis) |

Thanks guys.
I'm beginning to see why all the English teachers end up going to Madrid - south and east of Madrid it's all Catalan and dialects, north of Madrid it's not that exciting and a bugger to get to from the UK (seems there are no direct flights between the UK and Santander). Madrid it is then! |

You can fly to Asturias airport, which I believe is in Oviedo, quite close to Santander with EasyJet. Or you can fly with Ryan Air to Santander. Both leave from Stansted. |

Sarah, los catalanos also speak castillian, as do the gallegos in gallicia and los vascos in pais basco and Navarra, also the dialects (andaluz etc) are not so very much much more difficult to understand than 'standard' castillian.
Nevertheless madrid is also fine; if stifling hot in summer and so very very far from the sea! |

Santander, great place , cooler, greener. Im back in the US now but I do log in once in a while and Santander is great , jobs not as plentiful as Madrid or BCN though. |

IT'S NOT A VERY BIG CITY, BUT IT'S A NICE PLACE TO LIVE. NOT TOO COLD IN WINTER, AND FINE IN SUMMER, IT'S GOT BEAUTIFUL BEACHES AND THERE ARE INTERESTING PLACES TO VISIT AROUND, LIKE COMILLAS (ON THE COAST) AND SANTILLANA DEL MAR THAT IS A PRETTY MEDIEVAL VILLAGE. YOU CAN CATCH THE FERRY TO ENGLAND FROM ITS PORT. |
