One of the more blatant examples I have seen recently is the one from the outfit Canadian Center S.C.(on the Jobs Offered Forum). One of their "requirements" is that the applicant be between 23 and 29 years of age.Rank discrimination...just as bad as discrimination based on race or gender. |

Hmm.. I am right in that age range, and yet because of the age range mentioned in the ad would not apply for such a job. (I always find it suspicious when companies want such young employees.) |

Good for you Celeste. Everyone should do so. What countries seem to have the most incidences of ageism? Since I'm 38 this is very interesting to me. Tefl teachers unite! |

You are only 38.That is still young.Do not even start worrying about it until you hit 45.That is, of course, if your health is good.If you have health problems,it does not matter how young or old you might be.In answer to yuor question...countries in Asia, with the exception of China(maybe also with the exception of Vietnam and Laos and Cambodia). That leaves you with the ones who DO(one begins with a "K".the other with a "T")and they are both TESOL "hotspots".They like nice young Barbie and Ken types. |

I'm 55, looking for my first ELT job. Sooner or later someone will look past the numbers and see the person. |

Hi
The reality that you are getting past your sell by date once you get past 35 is slowly spreading even in this place, my current employer in the last recruiting session rejected those over 43 years of age and instead plumped for the "young and dynamic" option despite the fact they had little or no experience of teaching and even less personality or chrasima. If you are already established and are a known quanity and get recommended or even head hunted then age is not going to be a barrier, yet ,however, those like our not so Mr Young is going to find it difficult looking for his firstposting at 55 which is not much older than me ,one of my collegues retires this week at 65 and he has being here for less than 10 years so I would say there is hope but don't expect it to be easy ,back home we both would be on the scrap heap ,thats sad I think . |
