Are you serious ?
I think the Military Administration in Baghdad has more to worry about than recruiting TEFL teachers to work in occupied Iraq.

Try Saudi. At least it is comparatively quieter !

What an excellent idea. I'm sure those prisoners would love to learn such useful phrases as "Please stop hitting me," "Ouch, that hurts" and "So, what do you do in your spare time, Lynndie?"

A couple of months ago I got a phone call from a recruiter in the D.C. area. He asked if I'd be interested in teaching in Iraq! The salary was quoted at 75k plus 5k after 6 and 12 months. I asked where I'd be located...he said I'd be moving around a lot! No doubt!!!!

I politely declined.

Dear Pilot in Command, who is your recruiter? Does he have an email address? I would go to Iraq to teach no problem.

Dear GabeKessel.

Well, I guess you're a better man than I am.

If I had information, I'd be reluctant to pass it on to anyone. I don't want that on my conscience.

Fortunately, I don't have to wrestle with that. The call was unsolicited, and since I had NO interest in giving those idiot terrorists the opportunity to add me to their trophy list, I took down no information about the company, the caller, etc.

Despite what you may hear to the contrary from those in Washington, things are getting worse there. Even Colin Powell finally admitted that on a news program this past Sunday morning.

I wish you the best, but I hope you find something better than Iraq. (I wouldn't recommend Saudi Arabia, either -- that advice comes from personal experience.) You can't enjoy the money if you're dead.

The higher the risk, the higher the reward. People are working out there- I have friends making $12,000 a month. I have just spent 3 years in Saudi and would not mind going there again. I am also short in stature and Mediterranean-looking so I do not stand out as much. I grew a moustache when I was in Saudi and put on the same clothes that most Arab youths wear- a soccer shirt, a pair of track pants and slippers. Most people waould talk to me in Arabic and I also replied in Arabic.

A Brad Pitt would stick out there but I do not stick out so much.

Anyway, since you have no email of the person, it is a moot point anyway. Thanks for replying. Gabe

Hello Gabe

Although I understand the concerns of those who are skeptical about work in Iraq, you bring up a good point for some. If someone can blend in well in these countries, it can be impossible for someone outside to just simply spot that person. Some of these groups that are kidnapping people are pretty crazy; but if someone is willing to work in Iraq, they would be better off looking like an Arab there. And I am sure that anyone that goes can have one heck of an experience to remember there.

So, I'd be interested, privately or on this thread, if you find out any information about the opportunities in Iraq.

I think www.amideast.com may have some clues although I did email them and there was no reply.

My Black American friends who work in Iraq and Saudi have never been bothered. They are thought of as being Africans and poor and no one even thinks of harming them. When they are asked the perennial ' Ey jinsiya" ( What nationality?) they just say: "South Africa" or "Ivory Coast" or whatever.

In the eyes of most of the world " American" is a race- blond people with blue eyes and names such as John Smith and Steven Johnson. Thank Hollywood movies for that. And the fact that most CEOs emplyed overseas are WASP elite Americans.

All the rest are not Americans. So, a Brit is an American to most people. An Arab- American is not an American. Neither is a Leroy Washington from Atlanta.

This is silly and naive but that is how the world masses think.

For those of us who do not look WASP these may not be such dangerous times in the Middle east.
