This is an extension of a conversation I had in class with my students (a bunch of accountants). Here's some ideas we came up with:
They all seemed to think that demand for English will remain high, and will grow. The Taiwanese seem to have been jolted recently by a poor showing in the TOEFL league.
Parents who send their kids to Buxiban don't really expect their kids to learn much English. It's a 50-50 split between "get the kids out the house" and real study.
I asked them if they thought the standard of English education will increase, but none of them seemed to think it it is low at present.
So I conclude that schools will not raise their standards until the market forces them to, but this seems unlikely as demand is predicted to rise. Therefore, the status quo will continue for the foreseeable. Wages might decrease if more teachers continue to arrive, but the ESL industry will remain solid.
Your thoughts on this matter are greatly appreciated. |
