I have had one heck of a time finding information on Panjin, Liaoning Province.

I could only find one map of where it is located (South of Shenyang).

If anyone in the know could give me even a trickle of information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Never heard of or about it, nor from anyone who has been there.
Liaoning is in the Chinese Rust Belt of Manchuria; the unemployment rate there is shockingly high, and so is crime. I would only move to a place that is reported as safe.

Panjin is small, very small. It is mainly a petroleum town and has little in the way of western amenities. I have a link to it somewhere.....hang on.....

This is from a teacher who went through there, lots of personal viewpoint. A student of mine said his brother is there and it's so small there is no university. Known for its crane refuge.

A few pictures of the crane reserve here, not a lot of info anywhere but this site also has links to most cities in the northeast.

Panjin is near the bottom on the left.

JamesD, you are my new encyclopedia friend!

I don't know where you get all this info.; I've seached high and low using yahoo, google, alltheweb, etc.

I am heading for Panjin, so the next message will be from there!

I knew a girl from Panjin and briefly looked at locating there. This was a fairly good while back.....

It seemed pretty nice if you can hack a relatively small and isolated town in China. Not the easiest path you can take, especially if you're new to China, but it's doable and has its rewards. You should be able to get to Shenyang and/or Dalian from there often enough to stock up on the foriegn goodies you want.

Most of Liaoning Province indeed fits Roger's description. But there are pockets of nice scattered here and there...I rather like Anshan, and Dalian is truly a delight.

I'm currently in Shenyang. Our school took us on a day trip to Panjin last October. It is a very new city in a low, flat part of the country. The main industry is petroleum which contrasts with a large environmental area consisting of "Red Beach" which isn't really a beach but a lot of crimson red seaweed, and a large reserved area on the migration path of the rare red-capped crane. The locals boast that the rice grown in the area is the most flavourful in China. They also boast of the crabs that like to live in the rice fields. Protein and carbohydrate all from one field. I didn't see much of the city itself but it seemed pleasant enough.

Yes, that DongBei rice seems to be excellent. I also lived in Jilin Province for a while, and was stunned to learn that it was a major producer of some of the finest rice in China. I'd always pictured rice as a warm, wet crop, but the northeast is decidedly cold and dry.

Nevertheless, Jilin Pearl rice is a treat. It taught me that there is more to rice than just "white stuff". It's sold all over China ("jilin zhenzhu da mi")- try it sometime!

You can keep the crabs, though...15 minutes of messy work to extract about 1/4 teaspoon of meat. Basically 8-legged sunflower seeds. Smile

I have arrived and Panjin and let me just say that thus far I am absolutely pleased.

I taught in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea for a number of years and my apartment is the best I have ever had.

2 bedrooms, a big living room, kitchen, air conditioner, balcony, and a BATH! The bath is what really impressed me...

As for the school, it is very tiny.

As for Panjin itself, very nice, but small. There is a KFC only 5 minutes from me, so it certainly helps if I miss western food.

I have been told that there are 3 foreigners in Panjin (apart from Koreans or what have you).

A Nigerian woman, a Canadian who married a Chinese girl, and myself. I have not yet met them, but I didn't really chose "small town China" to hang out with foreigners. (Although I am certain they could make excellent friends should we happen upon one another).

Thanks everyone for the information. You've all been helpful.

Good on ya, Dude, and good luck. Enjoy!
You're absolutely right, of course....if you wanted to hang out with people just like yourself, you could have just stayed home!
