This is the school that started hiring free labor, eg. volunteers with no teaching experience in late 2004 ; and decided to terminate me last year, 2.5 months into a 12 month contract. Reason: I had the highest salary in the whole school and I was TOO expensive, according to Dr. ZHANG, the principal at the time (he got terminated).
This is the same school I sued with a high power lawyer last year... exceptionally and to my surprise, I won the case and received heaps of cash in a settlement. Two weeks after I had the money, I found out Dr. Zhang had been fired. The school still kept the main trouble maker: Laura XING, the Head of the Foreign Department, and her henchwoman, Xu Laoshi.
Just 2 weeks ago, almost a year after the fiasco, I get a desperate call at 6 AM from a teacher I met at SHANGHAI EAST CENTURY SCHOOL...... just one week before she was scheduled to take a plane and go back home, the school had decided NOT to pay her last paycheck and BTW NO BONUS. Grounds? This is a communist country.

This is a growing trend in China. Once upon a time people used to be paid to teach on the Mainland, then employers began to take on volunteers, and now, people actually pay to work there (this is as many volunteers pay 'agency and management fees' for the privilege of working). |
