|

I'm looking into my next move, and after just a week in Turkey, it's right at the top of my list! I have a few questions, though. How does salary (plus benefits) compare to other countries? I'm used to having a low wage, living in Egypt, so it's not a big deal, but it's nice to know!
The other thing, I visited Istanbul and Izmir, and I'm wondering where is the best place to work? I loved Istanbul, but I guess the cost of living is really high there. If I wanted to save some money, where is the best place? I really don't mind - anywhere in the country is fine! I'm not limited to any particular city...
Are there any particular schools I should be looking at? I have quite a lot of experience, but no Masters (as yet), so is a University job out of the question?
Thanks for the help!! |

No masters no problem. You can get a private uni job with nothing. They are not going to check.
Istanbul is more expensive but Izmir jobs are less and pay even less.
Saving money? You are not going to save much even living like the frugal teflers you will meet.
You are limited since their are few places in Turkey that pay enough to make it worth saving.
Compared to other countries? Well forget Europe, sub saharan Africa, The Americas, Australasia and Oceania so that doesn`t leave many tefl career possibilites does it?
Making money in tefl-forget it. |

Sekhmet , I have read many of your posts and i realise you are an intelligent person and i am sure you have done reading on this forum and know that 31s word is not gospel. You can get jobs here in universities without an MA. At a private university youre looking at about 1500-2000ish dollars per month depending on number of years experience. At the higher end much more. I admit that most of the jobs are through recommendations. But even without contacts, jobs are here(in prep year). If you cant save money on 2000 a month in Istanbul then you never will.
Now, let me look into the future. 31 will say I am talking c.rap and other regulars will back me up. |

No MA no problem. Exactly what I said. Which unis pay much more than 2000 a month? It could only be Koc as Sabanci and co don`t pay much more than that but your definition of MUCH must be very generous. Don`t forget someone left Koc to come to The Crime so it cannot be all that great now can it? |

Koc only applies North Americans and is ''hired up.''
Sabanci only pays 2000 a month, in YTL and I hope is ''hired up.''
But worse than that they are both so far out of the city, off ya I like living in the gercek ''Istanbul'' and all that grading of papers.
''At the higher end much more'' you said. I see you have given up with that tefl dreamer nonsense. |

Thanks a lot - that's really helpful. I knew I couldn't save much, but $2000 a month sounds like a fortune compared to what I'm used to!
Is there anywhere else in Turkey that is good to work? I love the culture over there, and I'm not majorly into big cities, but Istanbul was beautiful! So, again, money isn't the biggest concern, but the school and standard of living are pretty important!
The idea of a university sounds like a good plan. Hopefully my experience will be a good thing...
Thanks again!

I don't want to get into a long discussion on pay, but the truth is if you have the paper work and the background you will earn around 2000 or more a month plus privet health care.
It's put to you if you save or not. At one point ı earned more than 2000 US a month and still saved nothing no I save well and my income is the same. It's up to you. |

I didn't teach in the hazirlik at Koc, for the record. I taught university courses. Both the hazirlik and the comm dept hire non-North Americans, though not many. They generally recruit in the North American market, though. No idea about Sabanci.
From what I understand about Egypt, anywhere will pay more than there, but it is also more expensive here.
Good luck wherever you end up. |

Thanks again. It's going to be a bit before I get round to moving (I'm pretty well settled here for the next few months!), but I believe in planning ahead and being prepared!!!
So it's not like I have to make any sort of hurried decision! One other question (that probably seems a bit wierd) - I have 2 cats here, do I need any special certification/pet passport/etc. to bring them into Turkey? it seems like a stupid question, but if anyone has ever been to Egypt, you'll see why I couldn't safely leave them behind!!

Just when you think 31 knows a thing or two about teaching English in Turkey, he goes and drops a humdinger like this. Absolute garbage, nonsensical rubbish. Anyone reading this thread please understand that 31 really doesn't know the score. |
What is the humdinger? Let me go through the posts as I would like the chance to correct them.
1 I said no MA no problem. I worked at a private uni and had no MA then. Prep at your Yeditepes etc. require no MA.
2 I said nobody checks your qualifications. Nobody has ever checked my qualifications. I got the private uni job on the strength of an interview and got the job there and then. I did have to fill in a YOK form every year but nobody ever checked anything. To check properly you would have to contact the awarding body of the qualifications presented-I believe that there are organisations that do this for a small sum.
3 I said that Koc only employed North Americans and I realise that that was a mistake. Molly said that they have some non North Americans. Sorry I was mistaken. I know Molly has every right to tell me where to go but I was wondering if she could comment on this:
I worked with a woman who has left Turkey now but while we were working together she told me that she applied on spec to Koc and received a snotty letter back saying that they only employed teachers with a Masters from a North American or American university. It was some time ago but I am sure that I remember it correctly.
Hired up. Molly said a while ago that Koc was hired up. I had a look at their ELC centre and it just said to apply through clearing at the TESOL conf. Seems correct that they are hired up.
Do you really think that Sabanci are short of teachers and recruiting now? I went to TESOL Arabia two and a half years ago and went to a workshop given by a Sabanci Uni teacher who I vaguely knew and we talked about money and he told me the salary was about 2000 dollars a month in TL. Are you saying it is much more now?
I said most TEFL jobs are in Ist-aren`t they? And salaries in place like Izmir are less, aren`t they? I should have qualified that there are exceptions like Izmir Economics Uni and a few Intl. Schools.
TEFL in Europe/Sub Saharan Africa etc. where are the well paid jobs-I have never seen them. I had a look at the BC employment opportunities today and the money is poor even for Middle East jobs. Have a look at what they are paying for Egypt.
I also said that there are no unis here paying MUCH MORE than Molly`s and dmb has not been able to prove otherwise.
I said to forget about making money in TEFL. That was a one liner but EFl is a low pay low condition industry -have a look at Molly`s US job ad and have a look at all the UK TEFL jobs-have a look at the jobs board here and tell me otherwise.
Anyway if you reply please do so with proof and I would appreciate it if Molly would comment about Koc. |
