I've had my eye on S Korea for awhile now, as I plan to take a year off from teaching American high school for the wunnerful wunnerful experience of teaching ESL. I think I could make some good money there (to be used for traveling), but it seems a little uptight there. (Myriad reasons; my opinion/impression only.)
SO... I've been thinking of Turkey lately as things seems a bit more down-to-earth there, and the location geographically is intriguing, etc etc.-- you know the upsides of Turkey. So what I'm getting at is: if an enterprising young fellow were to arrive in Turky at the end of August, what would his chances of finding an adequate job be?
Me: A Master's in English, BA in English, no TEFL experience/degree, several years teaching experience (mostly secondary English). Hoping for: a job where you work with adults, can save enough to travel a bit, and maybe live in a city like Istanbul for a change (I live in a small town).
Am I completely mad? Where should I go first to look for a job (cruise the unis, etc)-- or can it be done reliably over the internet (preferred!!!)?

I have to admit, I'm a little leery of posting on this forum-- lots of weird, confrontational stuff going on. Are there regular ESL brawls in the alleyways? ESL gangs roaming the streets, looking to split someone's infinitives, so to speak?

Anyway, any pertinent info is much appreciated, and details will be postively drooled over.

Don't sweat it. You can probably get a uni job - which, if you've been digging through the posts, are Koc, Sabanci, etc. Apply directly to them with your profile and information and they will let you know whether or not they'll hire you.

Koc and Sabanci aren`t sitting there during the Summer waiting for emails from people.

Try the Doguses and Yeditepes in early September.

You mentioned that you are a high school teacher. You will easily find a position at a decent school.

Decent is a relative term. If they are so decent why aren`t they ''hired up'' by July when the new term starts in Sept?

Many people accept jobs(note the plural) then dont take them up, hence when it gets to the start of the acadmic year they are desperate for teachers

That is a phenomenon usually associated with the tefl bucket shops. You cannot blame the dross for jumping ship before they have even started when a less crap job comes along. Offer good pay and conditions and you won`t have to employ the unqualified dross last minute.

If your going to Istanbul you might want to speak to Molly, from English Time. She seems nice and knows what she's doing. I applied and got a job no problem. I'll be heading out at the end of August. We had some friendly e-mail exchanges and I am qualified to teach as I have a B.A. from Ottawa University and a Tesl certificate by a certified Cambridge teacher. So check it out you have nothing to lose. I'm sure she can lead you in the right direction. Good luck in your search.

If your into teaching kids (ie high school) you will get a job, a few schools will always be looking to top up staff numbers. Alot of teachers just don't come back after their long paid summer break. Rolling Eyes

This would mean having to go through all the legal crap and you would have to start in Sep and stay on till the end of Acc-Year. (1st of July).

Pay would be alot better than the McSchool places. You would be looking at between 1400-1800 as a new teacher depending on your paper work. With your papers should be simple enough to get a job with fair pay, privet health cover and place to stay.
