I know there's some posts out there that ask for a poll or whatever on the best places to live in Taiwan. Unfortunately, they really don't give much insight to the newbs out there (like me).
I am leaving for Taiwan in less than 2 weeks and was gonna travel a little to see which city would suit me best. Just wondering who thinks what of the cities in Taiwan. I don't need to know that they are polluted or crowded cause that is an obvious point. I need to know which city you would chose over all the rest and why.
Thank you very much.

What pair of shoes is best for a person to wear?
Hint: You need to tell us more about you or what you want, buddy. |

Sry, I guess I wasn't asking the right question. What makes where you live a great place to live and why would you chose it over any other place?
I am looking for a fun city but not overly crowded. Friendly foreign communities and people that enjoy sports or going out. Also want to be able to escape the city to some beautiful scenery if need be.
Was also wondering if it is easy to find black market music (good selection) like it is in China?
Thanks |

Hey Jonathan! Good luck when you get here....depending on where you're coming from the people will seem very friendly which is always a comfort in stressful times!....as a recommendation i'd mention Tainan. I arrived here 3 months ago on the recommendation of someone else....its in the south next to the ocean and just a short scooter ride away from the mountains...also Taiwan is a very small island so most cities are only a stones throw away from beautiful countryside....the east coast is by far and away the most beautiful coastal area....You'v got Taidong over there which is a very small city but pretty chill and good for surfing if you like that.....So straying a little from the topic here.....ahh yes, Tainan! The old capitol and cultural center of this island of lost charm......A fantasticly friendly group of foreigners live here...a very laid back atmosphere about the place....people from Taipei consider Tainan to be backwards....if that means the pace of living is slower and the people are more in touch with their heritage then surely not a bad thing.....temples abound...its half the price of the new capitol....you'll be paid the same money though, so definately a plus point there. The weather is better...it rains too much in Taipei...If you like sport theres lots of opportunities...the xpat soccer team 'tainan phoenix' is a great chance to meet lovely people and play some footy..also you'll get lots of help there with job hunting, little tips and apartments.....enough said....Taichung and Kaosiung also good places in the south....good luck maybe see you here soon, Anton |

thx for the reply. Is it easy to find someone to teach you how to surf? Never done it before but would love to try it.
Also, how is the teaching situation? Easy to get a job? I have a UNI degree in business and 8 months experience teaching adults in China.
Thanks in advance for info from anybody anywhere. |

Hi Johnathan,
The major cities on Taiwan share many of the same characteristics. The exception being Taipei in that it has more infrastructure and Koasiung becuase it has a port.
Pollution, discrimination and crime are serious problems all over Taiwan and one the occupational goverment has chosen to ignore rather than deal with.
I would recommend that you start in Taipei to find a job. Once you get a steady income stream then start looking at other locations and employment.
Please read this.

Good luck!
