I've been thinking about coming to teach in Taiwan?!
I'm a little concerned about some of the things I've been reading about the health and criminal background check.
As far as the criminal part what exactly will disqualify you for obtaining a visa. When I was much younger I had some petty misdemeanor stuff, it should be expunged by now but one guy on this forum was talking about how something a decade ago showed up.
As for the the health check I'm clean, but I'm worried about them sticking needles in unusual places. What's the process?
Finally as a side note what do you guys think is better for teaching ESL: Taiwan vs. Korea, Japan vs. Taiwan???

I doubt that anyone here will be able to answer this question with any certainty. Visa processing in every country is kept a closely guarded secret.
Many times you can get a visa to come to Taiwan without a criminal check. It all depends upon which office you go to and the clerk that processes your application. It all comes down to luck.
In some cases a country may exclude you if you have any sort of criminal record. In other cases they may only exclude you if you have a violent criminal background. Unfortunately not even the visa office will answer your questions on this (categorically) and ultimately you will just have to make an application and hope for the best.

There will be needles involved for the blood tests, but they will only stick this in your arm pit. The only other needles you may need will be for vaccinations. |

With regards to your question about Taiwan Vs Japan, I'd say definately Japan. If you don't speak the language then living and working in Tokyo is a lot easier than living and working in Taipei, in my experience. Also, the major language schools take better care of you in Japan, they pay you more and there's a lot less preparation to do. The pollution is a LOT worse in Taipei than Tokyo, and things like ordering food are easier in Japan. Obviously I have made generalisations, and you could end up in a crap area of Japan in a crap school but in my opinion there's more chance of that happening in Taiwan. If you've never been to Asia before and have never taught before, go to Japan. |
