What is an Advisory teacher?Do they teach? How do you apply?
What are the working hours for Primary as opposed to Secondary Net teachers? Is the salary the same for both Primary and Secondary teachers? Will one have a full summer vacation July/August or does one have only 2 weeks and then have to teach "summer camps'?

Advisory Teachers are part of a team of teachers working from an EMB office in Causeway Bay. They do not teach. They are assigned several schools and visit these schools on a regular basis to provide guidance/assistance/PD, etc to the PNET and the local teachers working with the PNET. They are there to ensure that the EMB guidelines for deployment of PNETs are followed. Well, that's the ideal, but it is easier said than done.

Every school is different. I'm a PNET, my hours are 7.15 - 3.30 in one school, 8.00 - 4.30 in the other, but actual working time is usually longer. I have a PNET friend who works 9 to 5 exactly. I often work half a day or more on the weekend, especially during first term.

No. As in most places, Secondary teachers eventually earn more than Primary as they move up the salary scale.

Many PNETs and NETs get at least 4 weeks, some get more, some, less. Depends on the schools.

Until you come to HK, it is difficult to understand how there could be so much variation in working conditions. Every school is autonomous and the principals make the rules!

Forgot to say how ATs apply. Vacancies are advertised in the SCMP and on the EMB web site. Check the NET section of the EMB web site for more information.

Also, some ATs are local teachers seconded to the EMB.

Thanks for the NET info... From reading your post do I understand that there are 2 salary pay scales one for Primary and one Secondary?...I should think that as one advances up the pay scale, it shouldn't matter on whether you are Primary or Secondary?

Those long hours at school are they all contact hours?...Is any of that time preperation time... Is there more preparation time with secondary or primary... I am qualified to do either Primary or Secondary... Which is an all round better situation...Primary or Secondary?Regardless of how qualified and a good, dedicated teacher you are, it makes sense to have a native HK teacher assistant especially with the Primary...Is there such an assistant or are you own your own from day one? Thanks...

I think it's the same salary scale, but primary teachers can't go up as high as secondary teachers. This might be because we are classified differently. It can be rather confusing.

No, there's lots of time for prep. Teaching about 24 35-minute lessons a week, plus extra-curricular activities. Prep includes preparing lots of new teaching resources and school-based curriculum development.

I don't know how much prep time secondary teachers get. It's hard to say which is the better situation. I love being in primary and would hate to teach in secondary schools -- I think their job is much harder than mine. On the other hand, I have a friend who was a secondary NET , but changed over to Primary. She says the secondary teacher's job is better. However, be warned, no two SNETs or PNETs have the same experience. Some SNETs are very happy, as are some PNETs. Others are in very difficult schools and can't wait to get out.
So, while you can read the job descriptions for SNETs and PNETs, the reality can be quite different.

Most SNETs are on their own in the classroom. PNETs always co-teach with a local teacher, but might run some extra-curricular activities alone.
